The Head of Performance reports to the NRL Head Coach and is principally responsible for supporting the NRL Head Coach in:
- managing the integration of the Physical Performance Department, the Medical Department, Player Welfare and Football Coaching Department
- analysing daily metrics and collated data from all training sessions to ensure the Strength and Conditioning programs are relative and effective to a competitive NRL team
- ensuring the effective delivery of all on-field and off-field conditioning programs to the NRL squad through GPS data interpretation and volume/intensity monitoring
- coordinating the Medical Department, Sport Science, Coaching and Specialist Consultants to plan pre-season and in season micro-meso and macro programming
- interpreting the sport science data relevant to each coaching department and educate to promote informed application to training process. This includes GPS, Polar, Wellness, Physical Markers and Athletic Testing Protocols
- overseeing and directing the nutrition program in consultation and support to the dietitian
- Initiating and providing pathways to implement individualised dietary plans as informed by anthropometric measurements
- engaging each player with detailed one-to-one feedback opportunities from information extracted from the club’s monitoring technology with an emphasis on training progress and gameday performance
- managing daily physical loads and intensities to elicit the best physical and mental outcomes
- engaging and overseeing the relevant departments in the reconditioning of NRL athletes
- implementation and research of new sport science and coaching science innovations and initiatives in conjunction with consultants, performance and medical staff
As Head of Performance, you will be responsible for the delivery of the following key outcomes:
- demonstrate a high level of planning and coaching of physical development in all NRL squad players in all the key areas of athletic, functional & technical development (as measured against Physical Development Model benchmarks of testing/assessment). Including but not limited to annual/monthly periodization of all applicable training loads (field, strength, energy systems conditioning) for fully fit athletes
- demonstrate administrative ability in the performance enhancement area by keeping accurate and up to date records and providing punctual information as requested by the NRL Head Coach. Including but not limited to annual/monthly/weekly review and monitoring of all applicable training loads (field, strength, energy systems conditioning) for fully fit athletes
- establish long term plans for each individual player with regular, timely review periods, assist in the development of rehabilitation programmes and to address any issues that impede the player’s physical development or recovery
- design implement and oversee world class energy system conditioning programs including field based and non-field based training practises
- oversee the design and implementation of world class strength and power programs
- oversee external providers of a wide range of training modalities required for professional level competition including wrestling, Pilates, yoga and additional recovery methods
- oversee the design and implementation of world class best practise recovery practises to ensure all athletes are prepared for each training session and competitive match
- oversee all elements of NRL sports nutrition programme including implementation of supplement protocols (including monitoring and reporting to relevant peak bodies such as the NRL), game day and travel scenarios
- manage all relevant support staff in the performance department including strength and conditioning coaches, sport scientists and dietitians
Essential
- Minimum of 5 years full-time experience as Head of Performance
- Experience in coordinating strength & conditioning services for national and international programs
- A qualification at minimum Bachelor’s degree level in strength and conditioning, sports science or related area specialising in the area of physical preparation of elite athletes
- Experience as a Strength & Conditioning Coach in high level rugby league or equivalent code for a period of 10 years or above
- Demonstrated knowledge of physiology and experience with rugby league players
- Honours/Masters/Doctorate degree in strength and conditioning, sports science or related area specialising in the area of physical preparation of elite athletes (especially in applied physiology with running based athletes/players)
