We are seeking an experienced Legal Counsel to join our growing consumer finance company in central Perth and provide general in-house support across diverse topics from Regulatory Disclosures to Employment, Commercial Contracts to M&A. Foreign qualified lawyers from New Zealand or the UK will be considered but you need to be on-site in Perth.
Client Details
My client is an ASX-listed consumer financing business with branches and retail locations across Australia, New Zealand and the UK. Highly recognised brand, they have diverse legal requirements from franchising and property topics, to complex regulatory obligations with ASIC. The firm chooses to keep most legal topics in-house and therefore this is a fast-paced role with diverse tasks and the successful candidate must be willing to work collaboratively with the business and C-Suite.
Description
As Legal Counsel, you will be involved in a variety of legal matters, including but not limited to:
- Regulatory Work : You will be working closely with our compliance team to ensure we are aligned with regulatory requirements, particularly with ASIC. A solid understanding of Australian and New Zealand regulatory frameworks is key.
- Corporate & Commercial Work : They're looking for someone with a strong background in Financial Services, M&A or Corporate Law to support on commercial property, procurement, leases, acquisitions, and finance matters.
- IP and Marketing : While most IP work is managed by in-house IP expert, you will still be expected to support marketing teams as required.
- Human Resources : In addition to corporate matters, you will assist with HR-related legal issues.
- Acquisitions : You will also be involved in ongoing acquisitions, including franchise law matters.
- Dual-Qualified Consideration : Preference will be given to candidates who are Australian qualified, but are open to considering foreign-qualified lawyers, especially those with UK qualifications, who are willing to get dual-qualified.
This role requires someone who is comfortable in a fast-paced, ambiguous environment with a focus on process-building. As our Legal Counsel, you will be part of a small, yet effective team supporting a large client base.
The benefit is that despite being active overseas, you are not expected to do anti-social working hours (i.e. after 6pm).
Profile
- 6-8 years of post-qualification experience. Experience in-house is preferred but secondments will also be considered. Those with M&A or Corporate Law backgrounds are highly interesting!
- Familiarity with ASIC regulations and the financial services regulatory landscape is highly beneficial, but other legal exposure areas are also highly interesting (see point below).
- Experience with procurement, commercial property, acquisitions, leases, and finance is highly advantageous.
- Preference for Australian qualifications, but UK-qualified lawyers or foreign-qualified candidates with a willingness to dual-qualify are encouraged to apply.
- Team-Oriented: While you will act as an independent advisor to the business, you must be able to collaborate effectively with the team and respect a non-competitive, supportive culture.
And You...
- Strong Team Player : You should have the ability to work well in a small team where respect is key, and competition is not part of the culture.
- Comfortable with Ambiguity : My client are a fast-growing, diverse business, and the role will require you to be adaptable and able to navigate ambiguity as they build new processes and structures.
- Efficiency-Focused : The focus for this year is driving efficiencies across legal processes. You should be excited about improving and streamlining the ways of working while reducing external spend.
