Temporary full time (12 months)
Salary ranging from $77,012 to $130,542pa.
What you'll do
This role primarily involves the daily processing of Probate applications. You will work independently in assessing such applications whilst in a team of other Deputy Registrars, all of whom are entirely responsible for processing every Probate application filed in NSW. You will be responsible for the assessment of a high volume of applications within a short period of time, with a fresh allocation of applications on a daily basis. There is an expectation of meeting weekly targets to ensure applications are processed without delay. The volume of work is high. It is noted that the Court received over 30,800 applications in 2024, all of which are processed by Deputy Registrars.
The Deputy Registrar role also has been delegated powers by the Chief Justice to:
- Determine chamber applications, for example, the enforcement of judgments, granting leave to issue subpoenas, making orders for substituted service, registering foreign judgments. Each week you will be rostered to assess such applications in addition to your Probate application duties, as well as fulfilling other duties such as considering postponement of fee applications and the following duties:
- sitting as the Duty Registrar to provide procedural information to litigants, the legal profession and registry staff; and
- sitting in court to conduct examinations under the Corporations Act 2001, Criminal Assets Recovery Act 1900, Evidence on Commission Act 1995.
What we're looking for
- Candidates that have a keen interest in Probate, as the assessment of Probate applications is the primary duty.
- An understanding of the Supreme Court Act 1970, Civil Procedure Act 2005, related rules and practice and procedure, preferably with litigation experience and strong academics.
- A person willing to attend the registry in-person each weekday (working from home is not an option for this role).
- Attention to detail, with strong skills in time management and prioritising work.
- Candidates able to work independently.
- Candidates able to assess applications online, as the majority of applications are filed online with online attachments.
