Primary objective
To provide management to the Animal Welfare Branch (AWB) and its roles and responsibilities pursuant to the Animal
Protection Act 2018 and the Animal Protection Regulations 2022 . To provide briefings and advice to the Director Animal
Welfare on compliance and enforcement matters relating to animal welfare.
Context statement
To ensure that animals are treated humanely, to prevent cruelty to animals and to promote community awareness about the
welfare of animals across the Northern Territory.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide effective supervision to the AWB team of Authorised Officers responding to animal welfare matters.
2. Assist with and supervise investigations, evidence gathering and preparation of prosecutions briefs regarding breaches
of the Animal Protection Act 2018.
3. Monitor, develop and implement initiatives on the improvement of the AWB for better animal welfare outcomes and
improve service delivery.
4. Establish and maintain effective consultation and communication with a wide variety of community groups and
stakeholders to promote positive animal welfare outcomes.
5. Efficient management performance of human, financial, physical and information resources.
6. Participate in biosecurity emergency responses.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Demonstrated staff management experience with a small team.
2. Certificate IV in Government Investigations or equivalent.
3. Successful completion of the emerging leader’s program or equivalent.
4. Experience working in high pressure environments with compliance and enforcement being a core function.
5. Demonstrated experience interpreting and applying legislation and regulations with previous experience preparing
prosecution briefs.
6. Highly developed written and oral communication skills to provide concise and accurate reports and presentations.
7. Demonstrated experience dealing with livestock, wildlife and companion animal investigations, including conducting
compliance audits.
8. Current Northern Territory Drivers Licence, with the ability and willingness to travel to urban, regional and remote
locations throughout the Northern Territory, which may include multiple overnight stays.
Desirable
1. Tertiary qualifications in animal behaviour, agriculture or related field.
