About the role
As Australia’s power system transformation continues, the System Planning division is dedicated to enabling the reengineering of the power system to efficiently deliver a future system that will securely integrate large amounts of renewable energy and distributed energy resources.
AEMO System Planning is launching an exciting new project, to uplift the automation of power system analysis required to plan the future of the electricity system. The Optimise Power System Modelling (OPSM) project will create a new in-house web-based platform, for integrating electricity market analysis with power system analysis, including:
- Integration of multiple Python and PSSE based in-house power system analysis tools, into the new web-based OPSM platform.
- Facilitating seamless automated data transfer from AEMO electricity market simulations, to power system analysis tools on the OPSM platform.
- Uplifting power system analysis tools usability and performance (such as speed, functionality, and result processing).
A 20-month fixed term contract position, as Senior Engineer, you’ll apply your power system engineering expertise to develop solutions for the power system engineering aspects of the OPSM project.
What you will be doing
- Identifying, developing and standardising processes for creating required input data and files for the OPSM power system analysis tools, as a precursor to automating these processes.
- Writing Python code to achieve the target outcomes of the OPSM project. Including incorporating existing power system analysis tools on to the OPSM platform, improving their functionality and performance, and integrating them with electricity market analysis data.
- Overseeing work of a Power System Engineer, including scoping Python coding tasks, tracking progress, and reviewing work.
- Regularly collaborating with AEMO System Planning users of the existing power system analysis tools, to ensure OPSM implementation meets their needs and expectations.
- Creating documentation and leading training in use of OPSM once it is up and running.
What you will bring to the role
- Tertiary qualifications in Electrical Engineering with a discipline relevant to power systems and wealth of experience of relevant industry experience. Tertiary qualifications in another Engineering discipline may be considered with sufficient relevant industry experience in power systems engineering.
- Deep understanding and knowledge of the physical operation of electricity transmission systems.
- Extensive experience using PSSE power system analysis software for load flow simulations. Experience conducting fault level analysis is also desirable.
- Proficiency in automating processes and programs in the Python programming language, particularly using the PSSE Python API to automate PSSE analysis with Python.
- Demonstrated experience in leading work packages and leveraging junior staff to achieve timely delivery of specified outcomes.
