The Aboriginal Legal Service (ALS) was established in a critical act of self-determination over 50 years ago as part of the Aboriginal rights protest movement. We provide high-quality, culturally safe legal and support services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people throughout NSW and the ACT, and fight for social justice and equity for our communities.
What will you do?
In this role, you will be an integral and valued member of a highly skilled and high-performing Aboriginal Child and Family Advocacy and Support team which is part of the Care & Protection/Family Law Practice. The purpose of this position is to advocate for and support families involved or at risk of involvement with the child protection system in NSW, with the goal of keeping families safe and together.
Each day, you can expect to:
- Provide families with high quality information about the child protection system to help them navigate the DCJ’s actions and decisions and assisting families in considering their rights, options, and the potential outcomes of their choices.
- Support accessing services to meet families’ needs.
- Commitment to regional travel
- Attend court or meetings to support families as appropriate.
- Provide expert support and guidance to colleagues on issues of complexity and advocacy training.
Who are we looking for?
A highly skilled and motivated individual with a thorough understanding of the cultural, social, and historical needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. You will be able to demonstrate:
- Must Identify as Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander to be considered for this position which is a genuine occupational qualification and is authorised under section 14(d) of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977.
- Minimum Certificate 4 in Community Services or similar
- Minimum 4 years’ experience in child protection, community development, community sector advocacy, social work, family support service provision or related field.
- Unrestricted NSW driver’s licence with the ability to travel intrastate and carry passengers.
- Demonstrated experience working with children and families in a culturally safe and trauma informed way.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to establish and maintain boundaries.
- Good written and communication skills with computer literacy and the ability to learn new systems and technology.
