Northern Health are seeking applications from motivated and suitably experienced Family/Carer Peer Support Worker to join the North West Area Mental Health Service – Broadmeadows Adult Inpatient Unit.

Northern Hospital Epping, Broadmeadows Hospital, Bundoora Centre, Craigieburn Centre, and Kilmore District Hospital. In addition, Mental Health Services are provided at Epping, Broadmeadows, Jacana, Preston, Mill Park and Coburg.

Northern Health is the third largest mental health service in Victoria Northern. Within the Mental Health Division, we pride ourselves on providing high quality mental health services to people living in the northern regions of Melbourne, and work in a collaborative way with consumers and carers based on recovery principles. We aim to provide strong clinical leadership to support all staff in the provision of professional treatment and care by
our integrated community teams, inpatient, and residential services.

About the Role:

The role of the Family/Carer Peer Support worker at is an innovative carer focused role in a mental health setting offering various modes of support to families/carers of consumers.

The role is largely informed by the worker’s own ‘lived experience’ of caring for someone with mental ill-health and involvement with mental health services.

The carer peer support worker will work collaboration with consumer lived experience workers and clinical staff, in a holistic multidisciplinary team.

This role is a part time ongoing position working 40 hours per fortnight.

This role is responsible for:

  • Mutually support to families and carers in their own recovery, supporting the recovery of their loved ones and to build resilience
  • Offer phone, video call and in person support to carers
  • Support families and carers to connect and access a range of beneficial community supports
  • Build understanding of the effectiveness of the role of the lived experience workforces in clinical mental health services
  • work in conjunction with clinicians in the multidisciplinary team to provide holistic support to consumers utilising the Intentional Peer Support (IPS) Model
  • Assist with the orientation and introduction to service and supports as well as contribute to minimising the risk of re-admission

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • To have held/or are holding caregiving responsibilities in support of someone living with mental ill-health who is accessing mental health services;
  • The ability to use knowledge and skill arising from a lived experience of caring and supporting someone with mental ill health
  • Well-developed community and interpersonal skills, including the ability to consult, liaise and work collaboratively with consumers, carers and service staff;
  • An ability to work independently in an organised manner and to be able to be a good team player when required;
  • A high level of resilience;
  • An ability to use knowledge and skills arising from lived experience in a variety of settings;
