The School

The School of Translational Medicine (STM) is the FMNHS’s leading school for biomedical and clinical research and education, offering undergraduate and postgraduate study programs. STM is primarily located at the Alfred Hospital Precinct, with sites at Peninsula Health, and Cabrini Hospital.
The Department of Neuroscience , Monash University is involved in a broad range of basic, clinical and translational research and research training. The Department includes 28 major research groups focussed on epilepsy, stroke, traumatic brain injury, MS, brain cancers, movement disorders, and Alzheimer’s disease and other cognitive disorders. The Department has over 200 staff and students, including 66 PhD students.

The Role

This is a Research Assistant position working on the clinical development program of sodium selenate as a treatment for tauopathies, enabling the successful applicant to work within a nationwide group of clinician researchers.

The primary responsibility of the Research Assistant will be to assist the Project Manager in the day to day running of the selenate clinical trials. The Research Assistant will work with the Project Manager to ensure the continued successful running of these trials, which will include Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC) and Research Governance submissions, liaising with Investigators and Coordinators at study sites to ensure compliance with the protocol, adequate supply of the drug is available at site, coordination and management of study supplies, accurate maintenance of the study databases, including biospecimen and imaging inventories, and analysing study data.

The ideal applicant will have a background in clinical research in neurology, experience in HREC submissions and an interest in neuroimaging. Neuroimaging (MRI and PET) is a major component of these trials, as such the Research Assistant will also be responsible for volumetric analysis of structural MRI. Appropriate training and supervision for this will be provided by the Project Manager, with the opportunity for broadening of skills and training as the projects evolve.

Key Selection Criteria

Essential

  • A tertiary degree in biological/medical science
  • Experience in clinical research (ideally interventional trials)
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a large team
  • Strong organisational and time management skills
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct research as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office

Desirable

  • Experience with neuroimaging analysis (MRI and/or PET)
  • Experience in basic coding
  • Knowledge of neurodegenerative diseases
  • Knowledge/experience with redcap
