Qualifications & experience
- Experienced residential youth worker, with understanding of the complexity working with and mentoring young people.
- Knowledge and understanding of the Child Protection Act, the Charter of Rights and the Standards of Care.
- Ability to think and act calmly when dealing with heightened young people, fostering dignity and respect at all times.
- Shifts include weekday, weekend and sleepovers.
Tasks & responsibilities
- Maintaining a home like environment to help young people establish and grow positive and meaningful relationships and lives.
- Developing positive and responsible growth for young people by assisting in their problem solving and negotiation skills.
- You’ll teach life skills and care for children aged from 6 to18 and support their social and emotional development in real-life settings.
- Your shift will likely start by checking the scheduling for the day and a handover from the YW. Based on this you might be supporting education goals side by side with the child and enjoying a post-school ice cream.
- You might be taking them from their residential placement to Saturday morning sport, cooking them lunch and relaxing with a movie in the afternoon. Or maybe you will take the child to visit family and pair it with an activity like a bike ride in the park afterwards.
- Whatever you do, the goal is to ensure the child is safe and that you strengthen the rapport between you to improve things like self-esteem, empathy and determination so they are well-equipped to thrive in adulthood.
