Description:

Pathology Queensland (PQ) provides diagnostic pathology services to all Hospital and Health Services (HHS) across metro, regional and remote Queensland, offering laboratory services in the disciplines of: anatomical pathology, chemical pathology, haematology, immunology, microbiology and genomics. The successful candidate will perform a diverse range of complex and highly specialised diagnostic and therapeutic testing in the disciplines of Chemical Pathology, Microbiology, Haematology and Transfusion Medicine. The incumbent is expected to demonstrate independent judgement and responsibility in organising and prioritising workloads.

The successful candidate will report to the Haematology Supervising Scientist, however the incumbent will be required to perform duties in Haematology, Transfusion Medicine and at times may be required to participate in Chemical Pathology and Microbiology.

Your key responsibilities

You will be required to fulfil the responsibilities of this role in accordance with the Queensland Public Service values.

  • Adhere to defined service quality standards, health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.
  • Apply broad scientific knowledge, skills and experience in the analysis of patient specimens leading to the verification and validation of test results and the provision of advice to the clinical unit where appropriate to ensure that the pathology service meets the requirements of the Health Support Queensland.
  • Provide scientific advice and provision of results to Cairns Hospital and external clients relating to Haematology, Transfusion, Chemical Pathology and Microbiology in accordance with prescribed professional and ethical standards.
  • Work co-operatively and effectively within a team and with clients/stakeholders/managers and other health professionals, both internal and external to Queensland Health.
  • Deliver high level scientific knowledge, skills, experience and professional services by undertaking routine and complex pathology testing and related duties, while following the well-established accredited protocols and standards of the Laboratory.
  • Review, comment on and validate analytical results in conjunction with other pathology and clinical information.
  • With demonstrated experience, or as experience builds, apply increasingly independent scientific judgement to more complex pathology problems and decision making, under the scientific supervision or professional guidance of more senior staff.
  • Provide input in the development of Laboratory scientific practices, procedures and protocols within the Cairns Group Laboratory.
  • When delegated, participate in the relevant Discipline Working Party (DWP) sub committees for Pathology Queensland.
  • Participate and contribute to the identification, development and implementation of quality and service improvement activities to enable the laboratory to achieve NATA/RCPA accreditation and ISO certification
  • Train and provide scientific education and supervision for less experienced Laboratory staff, or undergraduate placement students, in accordance with NATA/ISO accreditation and certification.

Key competencies (role specific criteria)

You will be assessed on your ability to demonstrate the following:

  • Knowledge of Haematology and Transfusion Medicine testing and its role in clinical medicine.
  • Knowledge, skills and expertise in analytical methods relevant to the pathology laboratory.
  • Proven ability to work independently and demonstrate initiative in problem solving and innovative solutions.
  • Proven ability to participate in a team of professional staff to ensure the delivery of a high-quality testing service.
  • Good communication and negotiation skills with staff at all levels in a large organisation.
