About the opportunity
The Technical Officer will work within the School of Natural Sciences, primarily in Chemistry to provide technical support to teaching and research activities. The School of Natural Sciences trains the next generation of leaders in science, technology, and mathematics which are the future fundamental subjects of Australia. The Technical Officer will provide technical support to laboratory-based practicals for undergraduate students, research projects, day-to-day operations and the activities of research laboratories.
The Technical Officer is responsible for all matters relating to supporting the management and Safety, Health and Wellbeing (SHW) of teaching and research laboratories, including supporting the delivery of inductions, chemical management, facility maintenance and technical support for the School of Natural Sciences, primarily in Chemistry. The Technical Officer may be required to provide cross-discipline technical support to Biological Sciences when required.
What you’ll do:
- Support the organisation and management of day-to-day operations in teaching and research laboratories.
- Contribute to technical elements of the teaching program including demonstration, preparation, and delivery of teaching resources (e.g. use of instrumentation).
- Coordinate the development, maintenance and revision of laboratory manuals, safe work procedures, generic risk assessments, audits, maintenance records and other documentation.
- Conduct inductions on safe lab practices for all lab users maintaining clear records to ensure work is conducted safely.
- Provide technical analytical support by undertaking the preparation of samples to prescribed standard; collecting, preparing, and analysing samples for chemical determinations, undertaking initial analysis of data collected, and prepare reports of a technical nature as directed.
What we’re looking for:
- Demonstrated experience in Safety, Health and Wellbeing processes and safe systems of work management.
- Well-developed written and oral communication skills.
- Skills and experience using a range of computer packages, including word processing, databases, spreadsheets, email and cloud-based systems.
- A Bachelor of Science degree, preferably in Chemistry, or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and laboratory experience.
- Current first aid certificate or a willingness to undertake first aid and Fire Warden training.
- Current Working with Vulnerable People registration or willingness to obtain.
Salary details
Appointment to this role will be at HEO 5 and will have a total remuneration package of up to $102,190 pro-rata comprising base salary within the range of $78,210 to $87,342 plus 17% superannuation.
