Overview:
We have an exciting opportunity to be a part of the newly established Chemical and Environmental Hazards team within the Public Health Division as Senior Scientific Officer, Chemical and Environmental Hazards.
In this role you will:
- Control and coordinate complex research projects investigating human exposure to industrial chemicals, and remediation / management of sources of contamination to inform strategic policy and program delivery,
- Deliver state-wide specialised expert consultancy advice and services relating to complex exposure investigations to a range of clients to reduce and prevent the exposure of South Australian to chemical and environmental hazards.
- Develop and deliver novel, innovative, and tailored methods for environmental sampling and complex biostatistical analysis of health and environmental data to assess, monitor and report contamination trends and evaluate the effectiveness of exposure-reduction interventions and program to assist with protecting the health and wellbeing of South Australians.
The ideal candidate will have an appropriate degree in science, be a demonstrated collaborator, and have experience in the delivery of complex programs and services that identify, assess and reduce the impact of hazards on public health.
They will also have skills and experience in areas such as human health risk assessment, toxicology, chemical exposure, chemical scheduling and regulation, and product safety and poisoning prevention.
The Chemical and Environmental Hazards team protects and promotes public health by conducting human health risk assessments of exposures to chemical and environmental hazards. We do this by:
- Providing consultancy and authoritative public health advice.
- Working collaboratively with a range of stakeholders.
- Implementing and managing state-wide programs.
- Developing public health policies.
- Undertaking investigations and complex projects.

Criminal History Screening Requirement
- A National Police Certificate (NPC) for employment involving ‘Unsupervised Contact with Vulnerable Groups’ is required for this position (E.g. aged care employment or work involving vulnerable clients)
- A DHS ‘Working With Children Check’ (WWCC) is required for this position
Immunisation Risk for this position is Category C (minimal patient contact)
SA Health Services are required to implement the Addressing vaccine preventable disease: Occupational assessment, screening and vaccination policy in the workplace.
Special Conditions
- An appropriate Degree in Science (e.g. environmental or population science discipline, public health, behaviour, epidemiology or biostatistics).
- The position is based in Adelaide. The position requires some out of hours work, performing considerable field work duties, and travel to regional country areas that may require overnight stays.
- A current South Australian Drivers Licence and a willingness to drive are essential.
