Join UQ’s Research Computing Centre (RCC) as a Research Computing Systems Officer and play a vital role in supporting cutting-edge research through advanced computing technologies. In this dynamic position, you’ll contribute to the administration, development, and innovation of high-performance computing (HPC), research storage, and cloud operations.
Working alongside Senior Research Systems Engineers, you’ll apply your expertise in automation, scripting, and system administration to optimize research computing infrastructure. From providing hands-on support to researchers and troubleshooting technical challenges to enhancing automation frameworks and managing large-scale storage systems, your work will directly enable groundbreaking discoveries at UQ.

Key responsibilities will include:

Support & Administration – Provide second-level support to HPC and research storage users, troubleshoot technical issues, and assist with system administration across UNIX/Linux-based operating systems.

Automation & Scripting – Develop and maintain automation frameworks (e.g., Puppet, Ansible, Salt) and perform programming and scripting tasks to enhance research computing operations.

Storage & Infrastructure Management – Assist in the administration of hierarchical storage management (HSM) platforms and parallel filesystems, ensuring efficient and reliable research data storage.

Technical Documentation & Problem-Solving – Maintain clear and comprehensive documentation of systems, processes, and solutions while demonstrating strong problem-solving skills in all aspects of the role.

Bachelor’s degree in computer science/IT, with a basic understanding of networking technologies and Linux systems administration.

Practical skills in software engineering and programming languages (Python, Perl, C, Go, Bash or similar), coupled with creative thinking capabilities.

Excellent interpersonal skills for effective client communication, ability to meet deadlines, and commitment to upholding university values.

Understanding of parallel filesystems (GPFS), advanced systems administration principles,

Functional understanding of high-performance computing networks (Infiniband, IPoIB, OFED, RDMA principles).

Theoretical understanding of hierarchical storage management, and computational schedulers (PBS, SLURM, Torgue).
You must maintain unrestricted work rights in Australia for the duration of this appointment, and may be required to complete background checks including, criminal history and education checks. Employer sponsored work rights are not available for this appointment.
