About This Opportunity

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Veterinary Nurse to join our team at UQ Vets' Animal Hospital. The ideal candidate will provide exceptional care and support to animals in the Emergency and Intensive Care Unit. This role requires the ability to thrive in high-pressure situations, excellent communication skills, and the capacity to collaborate effectively with a multidisciplinary team. Shift work, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, is required to ensure round-the-clock patient care. A passion for animal welfare and the ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment are essential for success in this role.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Provide skilled support to a large veterinary team, including specialists, and contribute to patient care in ICU, isolation, and hospital wards.

  • Assist with radiography, CT, scintigraphy, and MRI procedures, and perform diagnostic clinical pathology techniques.

  • Maintain and clean technical equipment, ensuring proper care and adherence to SOPs.

  • Offer administrative support, assist with reception duties, and help manage pharmacy inventory using practice management software.

  • Provide clinical training and teaching support for veterinary students.

  • Deliver high-level customer service to clients, students, staff, and external parties.

As a 24-hour operation, your take-home salary will be dependent on your specific roster, including loadings of 50% for weekend shifts, 25% for night shifts, and 15% for afternoon shifts.

Afternoon shifts are shifts commencing at or after midday and finishing at or before midnight, Night Shift are shifts extending beyond midnight and finishing at or before 6AM. About You

  • Cert IV in Veterinary Nursing, Bachelor of Applied Science (Veterinary Technology), Bachelor of Veterinary Technology, or equivalent combination of education/training and at least 2 years of nursing experience.

  • Proven ability to maintain high standards of professional veterinary nursing across all areas of practice.

  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage tasks effectively.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, use initiative, and adapt to changing demands.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to manage professional relationships with colleagues, clients, and students.

  • Strong understanding of ethical principles and practices in veterinary nursing.

  • Knowledge of policies related to workplace health and safety, employment equity, and anti-discrimination.

  • An effective team player who fosters positive working relationships within a team environment.

  • Enthusiastic, self-motivated, and committed to professional growth.

  • Ongoing commitment to professional development and excellence in veterinary nursing.

  • Interest in contributing to the clinical training of veterinary and veterinary technology students.

  • Willingness to participate in professional service activities, such as VNCA, RSPCA, PetPEP, or AVA.

  • Possess or the ability to apply for a radiation license.

In addition, the following mandatory requirements apply:

  • Work Rights: You must maintain unrestricted work rights in Australia for the duration of this appointment to apply. Employer sponsored work rights are not available for this appointment.

  • Mandatory Immunisations: It is a condition of employment for this role that you will be required to provide evidence of immunisation against certain vaccine preventable diseases.
