Job Description:
The EL1 Microsoft SQL Database Administrator (DBA) is accountable under broad direction to undertake very complex work that delivers quality outcomes across the functions of the Client.
The position requires someone who is an experienced Microsoft SQL Database Administrator (DBA) with a solid understanding of PostgreSQL to join our team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for managing, optimizing, and securing our Microsoft SQL Server databases while also supporting PostgreSQL and other database environments as needed.
Key duties and responsibilities
Responsibilities of the role include but are not limited to:
- Administer, maintain, and optimise Microsoft SQL Server databases to ensure high availability and performance.
- Implement backup, and disaster recovery strategies for Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL, and other database environments.
- Perform performance tuning and query optimisation for Microsoft SQL, PostgreSQL, and other databases.
- Design and implement database security policies, access controls, and user permissions.
- Lead the administration of databases. Including setup, maintenance, and monitoring.
- Develop and maintain database automation scripts for routine tasks.
- Work closely with development teams to optimise stored procedures, indexing, and query execution.
- Conduct database capacity planning and resource allocation to ensure optimal system performance.
- Document database configurations, procedures, and best practices.
- Stay up to date with Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL and other database technology advancements and recommend improvements.
Rate :
The proposed rate should reflect candidate's skills and experience against the Evaluation Criteria. Candidates that do not demonstrate these criteria will not be assessed. Candidates should be aware that rates may be negotiated further as part of the selection process.
Criteria

Essential criteria
- 5+ years of experience as a Microsoft SQL Database Administrator.
- Strong understanding of T-SQL, stored procedures, indexing, and query optimisation.
- Experience in database security, access control, and compliance.
- Strong practical experience using scripting for database automation.
- Experience with PostgreSQL administration, including database setup, maintenance, and query optimisation.
- Experience with cloud-based database solutions (Azure SQL Database, AWS RDS for SQL Server/PostgreSQL).
Desirable criteria
- Knowledge of NoSQL databases and modern data architectures.
- Familiarity with DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, and Infrastructure as Code (IaC).
- Experience working with Kubernetes, Docker, and containerised environments.
