Invest SA, which sits within the Department of State Development, is a dedicated team of investment and business professionals that connects businesses and investors with opportunities, industry networks, and other government agencies in South Australia.
Invest SA understands the needs of businesses and investors and was re-established in 2023 to drive inbound international and national investment into key sectors in South Australia.

About the role:
The Defence and Space team within Invest SA targets investment into South Australia’s defence and space industries and supply chains, focusing on both large and small companies that will help build and enhance the South Australian ecosystem, contribute to research and development of sovereign ‘leapfrog’ technologies. The team also identifies investors who wish to partner with South Australian companies on the delivery of key commercial projects in the defence and space sectors.
The Director, Defence and Space will be the key driver to attract new national and foreign direct investment to South Australia from existing, interstate and international companies and investors.
In this role, you will oversee the strategic delivery of critical and complex projects and initiatives that build and maximise the capability and capacity of South Australian supply chains associated with the development of defence and space sectors.
You will work collaboratively with the other sector teams within DSD, Defence SA, other government departments, academia and our private and public partners to attract new companies and investment.
More specifically, you will:
- Proactively identify and facilitate inward investment opportunities that generate sustainable economic growth and employment in the State.
- Assess market intelligence on investment opportunities and trends, monitor economic performance of companies and industries at state, national and global levels
- Work closely with Defence SA to attract investment into existing and high potential projects
- Prepare high level complex reports and briefings that profile industries and companies for potential targeting or build the case for investment in South Australia within the framework of the State’s strategic objectives
- Coordinate across government projects in partnership with other government representatives, to deliver significant investment initiatives for South Australia
- Establish and develop effective collaborations and a network of strategic alliances with key stakeholders and investors across State and Federal government and industry
- Provide expert advice and support to the Executive Director, Chief Executive and other business development teams
- Contribute to the formulation and implementation of organisational strategies and lead the development of and implementation of sector specific strategies and business plans
- Lead high-profile delegations and investment missions both in-bound and out-bound as required
- Promote South Australia as a suitable investment location
Key Competencies:
To apply and succeed in the role, you will be able to demonstrate experience in the responsibilities listed above. You will also bring:
- Experience and knowledge of the Defence and Space sectors and a track record of driving/facilitating investment outcomes
- Excellent business acumen, proven business planning skills, analytical and research skills and the ability to evaluate strategy and apply data to drive business outcomes
- Strong interpersonal and relationship-building capabilities, with the capacity to engage and influence stakeholders at all levels.
- Demonstrated ability in people management and leadership capabilities, with the ability to drive and create positive culture.
Executive Core Competencies
- Within the context of the role responsibilities described above, ideally you will be someone who can competitively demonstrate your knowledge, skills and experiences and their suitability against the South Australian Executive Service (SAES) Competency Framework in the context of the essential requirements for this role.

Qualifications:
- Essential: Nil
- Desirable: Knowledge of South Australia’s defence and space ecosystem will be highly regarded.
Special Conditions:
- The role will be offered as full-time (1.0 FTE), for an initial 3-year contract commencing ASAP
- A Satisfactory Department of Human Services Criminal History Check or National Police Check (NPC) will be required prior to employment.
- The role requires significant out-of-hours work including interstate and overseas travel
