The Department

The Department of Local Government, Water and Volunteers (DLGWV), previously known as the Department of Regional Development, Manufacturing and Water, is at the forefront of driving sustainable growth across Queensland. The Role

Reporting to the Director, Media and Communication, your role will be to provide advice to manage the department's media and social media functions. You will provide advice to the Director, Minister's Office and departmental Executive on media management strategies, oversee the development of high-quality media materials and manage the department's public relations risk profile. You will maintain strong internal and external relationships, and work closely with other parts of Media and Communication as part of an integrated approach. You will also oversee a social media strategy which complements the whole-of-department communication strategy.

Key Accountabilities

  • Lead a team that delivers a professional and proactive and reactive media service that maximises awareness of the Department's programs and achievements.
  • Lead the integrated delivery of media content across digital channels, including web and social media.
  • Provide advice to departmental leadership on the strategic management of media issues and risks.
  • Develop strategies to achieve strategic media and communication outcomes in line with departmental objectives and government priorities.
  • Manage the delivery of a range of tactical media deliverables such as media releases and responses, speeches, talking points, media events, social and digital media content, media kits, and other support material required to execute effective media strategies.
  • Provide strategic media advice and assist with the effective management of issues on highly sensitive, diverse, and complex matters.
  • Build and maintain effective relationships within the team, department, government agencies, ministerial officers, the media, community, and partner organisations, to achieve a seamless approach to developing and implementing media and event strategies.
  • Provide leadership, direction and support to the team in order to deliver departmental outcomes and to build team capability.


About You

  • Although there are no mandatory requirements for this role, experience and/or qualifications in journalism, communication and social media, or related fields would be highly regarded.
  • Travel away from the centre may be required. This may involve travel outside of normal office hours and/or overnight accommodation for extended periods.
