What we do
The Infrastructure and Operations Division maintains national critical infrastructure for Services Australia and across government. We deliver a robust, secure, and resilient ICT environment so Australian citizens can access government services 24x7.
The Application Infrastructure branch is responsible for the provisioning and support of underlying applications and databases that support the agency’s critical services. This includes performing ongoing maintenance to ensure vendor support and stability, providing incident investigation and performance analysis using advanced monitoring solutions.
About the role
Database Administrators help ensure the agency's databases are operational, searchable and secure. They undertake activities to assist with streamlining the flow of data and securing it.
Database Administrators perform database administration research and analysis and may also assist with database design, translating business requirements into suitable support platforms. This includes focusing on issues such as reducing data redundancy within an existing system or improving the way in which it moves from one system to another.
Database Administrators have experience and a high level of proficiency in contemporary ICT servers, coding languages and databases. They work to ensure data and related systems and processes are fit for purpose, secure and high quality.
We are seeking Database Administrators with the skills, or the ability to acquire the skills, for the areas listed below.
Mainframe Database Administrators:
- IBM Db2 on mainframe systems, including database setup, configuration, and optimization.
- Mainframe interfaces such as ISPF, REXX, JCL, and z/OS utilities.
- Monitoring tools like Omegamon and Query Monitor for diagnostics and performance tuning.
- SMP/E for mainframe software installation and maintenance.
- Disaster recovery and backup processes for mainframe environments, including the use of Db2 Recovery Expert.
- Troubleshooting complex system issues and identify root causes using diagnostic tools and logs.
- ITIL processes and change management in a large enterprise environment.
Midrange Database Administrators:
- Diagnose and troubleshoot issues within Midrange DB2, Oracle, SQL Server, and PostgreSQL databases.
- Database maintenance, including updates, optimizations, and performance tuning.
- Use of scripting languages such as SQL, Oracle SQL, Python, Perl, PowerShell, Shell and YAML for automation and database management.
- Supporting infrastructure management and integration using OpenShift and OpenStack.
- Creation of playbooks within Ansible.
- Monitoring database health and performance using tools like Dynatrace, Elastic (Kibana), IBM Data Server Manager, SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS), MongoDB Ops Manager, and pgAdmin.
- Implement and maintain backup, recovery, and disaster recovery solutions.
- ITIL processes and change management in a large enterprise environment.
Teradata Database Administrator:
- Performance, configuration and maintenance of the Teradata systems.
- Monitoring systems and providing 24x7 on call support to resolve any hardware, software, performance related issues or job failures.
- Creation of new databases and service accounts that allow other teams to run their scheduled jobs.
- System backup and restoring objects when necessary.
- Teradata Disaster Recover system and the procedure to recover from a production failure if necessary.
Mainframe and M204:
- ITIL Foundations and ITIL Release and Change.
- TSO/ISPF Mainframe background experience.
- M204, JCL, Control-M, Python.
- Assembler, DMS (Rexx, Skeletons, Tables, etc), MQ, HTML, Java / JavaScript, JSON, C.
