IntroductionSafe Steps is the only 24/7, family violence response centre in Victoria, providing a “state-wide entry point” for victim-survivors of domestic and family violence. Services include information and referral, crisis response, specialist family violence risk assessment, safety planning, Webchat, and access to supported crisis accommodation.
Our vision is safety, support and respect for all victim-survivors of domestic and family violence.
Our practice is trauma-informed and guided by evidence. We provide services to all victim-survivors and recognise that most of our work is dedicated to the needs of women and children which reflects the gendered nature of domestic and family violence.

THE ROLE
The Intake Officer will work as part of the Victorian state-wide Family Violence service, providing first line response to service users contacting Safe Steps. The Intake Officer will work as part of a team to provide initial contact information and advice on service navigation, conduct a brief needs assessment, and transfer service users to the appropriate specialist family violence teams for further specialist family violence support.
PAY LEVEL: SCHADS Level 4 - Pay Point 1 ($43.08)
CONTRACT TYPE: Permanent, Part Time (0.8 FTE)
SHIFTS: Morning, afternoon and evening shifts available, including weekends.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Respond to incoming calls in a timely and professional manner in line with Safe Steps policies and processes, including updating client record database.
- Provide initial contact information and advice on service navigation.
- Conduct a brief needs assessment to determine which business area to transfer the service user for specialist family violence support or specialist case management.
- Identify service users or third parties who may be at high risk of harm to self or others and respond in line with Safe Steps emergency guidelines.
- Respond to service users through the Safe Steps’ webchat service and email inbox.
- Maintain and develop service and sector knowledge and meet core values and behaviours of Safe Steps.
Skills And Experiences
KEY SELECTION CRITERIA - Essential
- Diploma in Community Services or equivalent.
- Demonstrated experience working in a fast-paced environment.
- High level of attention to detail.
- High level of computer literacy with the ability to pick up new programs and systems quickly.
- Competent writing ability (case notes etc.)
KEY SELECTION CRITERIA - Desireable
- Previous experience working within the Family and Domestic Violence Sector
- Previous experience working within a Crisis or Emergency service environment
- Previous Experience working within a phone based service
