Where you'll be working
Royal North Shore Hospital Emergency Department is a busy tertiary service seeing 90,000 adult and paediatric patients annually and serving as a trauma centre and a state-wide bums and spinal referral hospital. Post Graduate Fellows have the opportunity to participate in all aspects of Trauma Care, from ED resuscitation to operating theatre management and ICU care, to post operative ward care and to discharge.


Purpose of the Position

The Trauma Fellow will be actively involved in the Trauma Service at Royal North Shore Hospital (RNSH). This position will involve working closely with the members of the Trauma Service and include liaison with the Emergency Department, Operating Theatres, Intensive Care Unit and the Acute Surgical Service at RNSH.
This is a unique opportunity for a Critical Care Post Graduate Fellow with an interest in Trauma management, to enhance their Trauma skills and use those in treating patients involved in major trauma.
The role will involve coordinating the resuscitation and ongoing response in major trauma patients and liaising with other critical care specialties and surgical specialties, to help co-ordinate the optimal in-theatre trauma response, and appropriate post operative care.
The role will involve being a representative at Trauma related meetings and optimizing the protocols and procedures involved in the management of trauma patients. The candidate would also be involved in the teaching of Junior medical staff, medical students and paramedical staff.
The Trauma fellow will be expected to be involved in trauma patient care from arrival at Hospital (Trauma Attends) when able, and in their care on the wards and in ICU. They will be involved in the provision of care of the Trauma patient and its coordination, participate and lead in governance, teaching and review of the Trauma pathways within the Hospital and participate in the Code crimson and trauma Morbidity and Mortality meetings.
The role will provide clinical management and treatment of patients under your care in a Northern Sydney Local Health District (NSLHD) facility or service. This care will be provided within the scope of practice endorsed by the NSLHD Medical and Dental Appointments Advisory Committee (MDAAC).

Selection Criteria

  1. MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia. Applicants must have Fellowship of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (FANCZA) or Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (FACEM) or College of Intensive Care Medicine of Australia and New Zealand (FCICMANZ) or recognition as a specialist by the Medical Board of Australia. Applicants expecting to be awarded their Fellowship within 3 months may be considered.
  2. Consistently demonstrates behaviours that reinforce the CORE Values of our organisation; Collaboration, Openness, Respect and Empowerment. Demonstrates these behaviours with all stakeholders; colleagues, direct reports, as well as our patients and consumers, and those that care for them
  3. Appropriate experience to practice as a Clinical Fellow in a Critical Care subspecialty (Anaesthesia, Emergency Medicine or Intensive Care). Experience in Simulation, prehospital and retrieval medicine is highly desirable.
  4. Experience with the provision of regional blocks (including with the use of ultrasound) to assist with analgesia in Major trauma patients.
  5. An ongoing interest in a career in Trauma care with demonstrated abilities in resuscitation; life, limb and sight saving procedures; and modern trauma management.
  6. Prepared to participate in overtime (including code crimson call backs) and on-call work and be involved in the weekend roster as needed.
  7. Experience and willingness to teach junior medical staff, paramedics and medical students.
  8. Demonstrated ability to work in a complex hospital based clinical environment
