About us

The Mornington Shire Council is a Local Government Authority providing a range of services to the twenty-two islands of the Wellesley Group located 125kms north-west of Burketown, 200kms west of Karumba and 444kms from Mount Isa, in the southern section of the Gulf of Carpentaria, residing within the State of Queensland.

Mornington island is the largest island of the group and the township of Gununa located on the southern end of the island, contains the Council’s offices and workshops, the community’s primary service providers such as the local Schools, Hospital and Aged Care, Emergency Services and other Government Agencies and Shopping. The town also houses the majority of the Shire’s population.

This position is residential, based on Mornington Island.

About the position

This challenging hands-on role covers all aspects of HR and administers key HR processes. Central to the role is the coordination of recruitment and all other end to end employee lifecycle.

Key responsibilities include:

  • End to end recruitment activities.
  • Job Description Classification.
  • Onboarding.
  • Project Coordination.
  • Policy Development.
  • HR support and Guidance.
  • Compliance and Reporting.
  • Employee Engagement.

Skills and experience

Our ideal candidate will possess the following:

  • Experience in a similar generalist HR role.
  • Strong understanding of HR processes, policies, and legal frameworks.
  • Experience in drafting and classifying job descriptions across various roles.
  • Expertise in managing the full onboarding process and ensuring new hires have a successful start.
  • Excellent project management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively and meet deadlines.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across departments.
  • Proficiency in HR software and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Detail-oriented, with the ability to identify areas for improvement and implement efficient solutions.
  • Bachelor's degree in human resources, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Good Knowledge of Local Government Legislation and Awards.
