Screen Programmers (Voluntary) - Remote / Work From Home

Environmental Films Australia
Melbourne Full-day Full-time

Description:

Job description

Are you a film lover with a critical eye? Do you have an interest in environmental issues? Would you like to be part of a values-led organisation that champions art to create change? Environmental Films Australia are looking for our newest Screen Programmers to join the team and help support our impactful film program.

What it’s like

As a Screen Programmer you play a vital role in our program curation by viewing and selecting high-quality and dynamic films. While the team is predominantly based in Naarm (Melbourne), Screen Programming can be undertaken remotely.

You’ll watch feature-length and short films and identify if they are appropriate for our flagship program, our curation service and/or our partner events. The topics we explore include: experiences of environments; Indigenous rights and stories; connection to Country; urban life and architecture; the awe of nature, flora and fauna; ecology; climate catastrophe; sustainability; activism; and the interconnection between people and place.

As a Screen Programmer, you will have a lot of flexibility in managing your programming commitments and working through your watch list at a time that suits you. For those interested, there’s also opportunities to get involved in co-watching, film acquisition, licensing, and liaising with filmmakers. Programming roles typically run for 12 months, with the potential for extension.

We’re a small team, so you’ll get a chance to get involved in lots of different areas and will have a lot of autonomy. Self-starters and keen beans will particularly thrive.

Time commitment

You'll be allocated a list of films (including shorts and features) to watch on a monthly basis (usually around 5-10 hours of viewing), which you can watch at a time that suits you.

You'll also attend a monthly meeting to discuss the films and make program decisions. These meetings take place:

  • Naarm/Melbourne-based Programmers: 10.30am - 12.30pm, the fourth Saturday of the month, North Melbourne (with hybrid option)

  • Remote Programmers: 6.30pm - 8.30pm, the fourth Tuesday / Wednesday (alternating) of the month, Online

There are occasional All In meetings that take place outside of the times above. We also have twice monthly co-working sessions that Programmers can opt in to join, but these aren’t mandatory.

About Environmental Films Australia

Environmental Films Australia (previously known as Environmental Film Festival Australia) is a volunteer community group, based in Naarm (Melbourne), that promotes action through cinema, connection and community. We prioritise climate and environments through film, provide platforms for artists to showcase their work and spaces for people to exchange ideas and solutions.

Our program navigates the relationship between humans and their environments and interrogates the way people think about the natural world. We feature films from the world’s most talented and socially-conscious filmmakers, embracing diversity and championing local, Indigenous, minority and creative voices.

We’re a registered charity that has been running since 2010, starting out as a weekend screening event in Palace Kino (as Environmental Film Festival Melbourne) and have since hosted festivals and events throughout Australia and online.

About you

To help create the best program possible, we’re looking for people with a variety of viewpoints and areas of knowledge. If you have skills or an interest to develop in any of the following areas, we’d love to hear from you:

  • Screen culture and film criticism

  • Contemporary environmental issues

  • Platforming First Nations’ voices

  • Arts curation and programming

This is a great opportunity to gain programming experience and we are open to hearing from people with all sorts of backgrounds. For example, you may: work in the arts and are looking for the chance to dip your toe into programming; be a student looking to put your studies into action and develop your critical-eye; be a keen environmentalist who’d like to support creating change through a new lens; love cinema and want the chance to talk and review films with like-minded people; or be a strong programmer, looking to take a step into acquisition and program development.

This list is not exhaustive and, above all, we prioritise enthusiasm, care, and a desire to learn.

We’re passionate about having a wide variety of voices on our Screen Programing Team and so are keen to hear from people who identify as any of the following: Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander or First Nations; LGBTQIA+; youth/young person; woman and/or gender diverse; person with a disability; neurodiverse; person of colour; part of the CALD community.
