Role Summary
We are seeking 2 skilled Mechanical Officers (Northern Beaches & Black Town) to provide technical expertise in maintaining and repairing heavy vehicles and specialised firefighting equipment. This role ensures that the fleet remains fully operational and supports emergency response efforts. The successful candidate will be responsible for carrying out inspections, diagnosing faults, and performing repairs both in workshops and remote locations.
This opportunity is available as an 18-month temporary contract position on an hourly rate basis. The temporary role is currently vacant until FY26/27 and is based at the Northern Beaches District Office. The temporary role is contingent labour, offering an hourly rate of $50-60/hour+super

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct maintenance, servicing, and repairs on heavy vehicles and firefighting equipment.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic faults.
  • Carry out repairs on engines, transmissions, braking systems, steering, and suspension.
  • Utilise the organisation’s asset management system to track maintenance schedules and work completed.
  • Provide mechanical support in field environments to ensure operational readiness.
  • Monitor and report on maintenance activities to enhance service efficiency.
  • Ensure all repairs and servicing are performed in line with safety and compliance standards.
  • Perform limited boat maintenance tasks where required.
  • Work a standard 35-hour workweek with flexible start times between 7:00 am and 7:00 pm.
  • Mentor junior team members and contribute to technical training as required.
About You
  • Trade qualification as a Heavy Vehicle Mechanic or equivalent.
  • Current Tradesperson Certificate for Heavy Commercial Vehicle repair (Department of Fair Trading) – Essential.
  • Medium Rigid (MR) driver’s licence, with willingness to obtain a Heavy Rigid (HR) licence if required – Essential.
  • Experience in maintaining and repairing diesel engines, hydraulic systems, and electrical components.
  • Boat maintenance experience is an advantage.
  • Knowledge of relevant Work Health and Safety (WHS) standards and regulations.
  • Ability to work in field environments, including remote locations, when necessary.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work autonomously.
  • Experience in preventive maintenance and record-keeping.
  • Willingness to undertake bushfire response training as part of operational support duties.
  • PPE and uniforms will be provided by the District.
  • Must have valid working rights in Australia (no sponsorship available).
