Job: 950343 | Full-Time | Permanent | Griffith, NSWAboriginal Legal Service (ALS) was established over 50 years ago in response to a protest movement. We provide high-quality, culturally safe legal and support services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people throughout NSW and the ACT.
What Will You Do?
In this role, you will be a key member of a motivated team.
Provide high quality legal advice and representation to clients and to assist them to resolve their legal problemsWork closely with the Managing Solicitor with a range of duties including the oversee of the officeSupervise and mentor junior solicitors and assist them in the development of their advocacy skills
Each day, you can expect to:
Prepare and run complex ACT Magistrates Court, NSW Local Court and Children’s Court hearings and sentence mattersAssist with the management of the overall practicePrepare briefs for counsel and attend to instructing counsel as directedOversee the allocation of work and management of workloadsAssist in the preparation of District Court short matters allocated to junior solicitors with permission to appearAssist the Managing Solicitor in the day-to-day operation of the office
Who Are We Looking For?
You Are a Highly Skilled And Motivated Individual With a Thorough Understanding Of The Cultural, Social, And Historical Needs Of Aboriginal And Torres Strait Islander People. You Will Be Able To Demonstrate
Legal qualifications and a NSW Practicing Certificate with a minimum of 2 years’ experience in Criminal LawProven capacity to perform a strong advocacy role for Aboriginal people in District Court and EAGP matters, along with more complex ACTMC/LC/CC mattersIn-depth knowledge and understanding of the criminal law, including practice and procedureWillingness to drive or fly distances within the region and stay overnight or longer to undertake court work or trainingAbility to perform management, supervisory and mentoring tasks in relation to a multidisciplinary team of staffKnowledge and appreciation of the cultural and social needs of Aboriginal people combined with continuing respect and support for Aboriginal cultural practices in dealing with clients, their families, communities, and staff
