About the Role

An exciting opportunity exists for an Old Age Consultant Psychiatrist to join SVHM’s Health Independence Program’s (HIP) Cognitive Dementia & Memory Service (CDAMS). CDAMS is an outpatient clinic for adults in the community experiencing changes in their cognition and/or daily function.

As a Consultant Psychiatrist within the service, you will be responsible for conducting thorough specialist assessments with the support of a multidisciplinary team (MDT), with a particular focus on (but not limited to) patients presenting with symptoms potentially suggestive of an overlapping chronic mental illness and emerging neurodegenerative process.

  • Provide comprehensive, holistic specialist assessment of patients who are referred to the clinic due to concerns about their cognition.
  • Formulate diagnoses of patients with cognitive concern and develop treatment and management plans, in conjunction with the wider MDT.
  • Support the team with an expert opinion for patients referred for cognitive assessment who may have an underlying or concurrent mental illness.
  • To contribute to the leadership and development of new initiatives and adopt a constructive and flexible approach to their implementation.
  • The CDAMS Clinic operates on Thursday mornings so availability to work at that time is essential.

Classifications for this position will depend on experience and overall time commitment to SVHM, according to the Medical Specialists Enterprise Agreement 2022-26, or its successor.

A Bit About You

Must Have

  • Fellowship of The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists or equivalent and Membership of the Faculty of Psychiatry of Old Age with experience and interest specifically in assessing and managing patients presenting with cognitive changes.
  • Highly developed verbal and written communication skills with evidence of working well within a multidisciplinary setting.
  • Ability to complete clinical documentation in a timely manner and in accordance with local and professional standards.
  • Current National Coordinated Criminal History Check (NCCHC) or willing to obtain.

Nice to Have

  • Strong links with local mental health services highly desirable.
  • Experience in the management of behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia in an inpatient or community setting.
  • Experience providing supervision and training of junior medical staff including education of Registrars and HMOs.
  • Excellent IT skills with ability to use telehealth as required.

About the Cognitive Dementia and Memory Service (CDAMS)

The CDAMS clinic is one of the Health Independence Program (HIP) Services and sits within the Specialist Clinics department, which forms part of the wider Access, Rehab and Clinics stream of HIP.

CDAMS is a specialist diagnostic clinic for people over the age of 50 who are worried about memory loss or changes to their thinking.
