About the opportunity

The Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies seeks to recruit an Aquaculture Facilities and Compliance Officer. The position will work closely with aquaculture teaching academics to support undergraduate teaching: sourcing, housing and husbandry of aquatic species needed for all teaching purposes. Manage animal ethics for teaching purposes. Assisting with practical classes and field trips. Compile, manage and assist with all regulatory compliance within aquaculture. The Aquaculture Operations Officer will need to work closely with the operations and facilities managers to ensure projects are covered for all permits, as well as biosecurity protocols within research and teaching spaces, including undertaking regular audits of all biosecure areas, along with ensuring compliance with facility guidelines, will be conducted as part of a routine schedule. Undertake bacteriological plating for wastewater treatment monitoring. A sound understanding of husbandry and systems technologies will be a necessity to fulfill this role to the standard required. Training and inductions for staff for all aspects of research compliance. Liaising with the University Biosecurity Committee, external stakeholders, government agencies will be necessary on a regular basis. Work with the Aquaculture Laboratory Officer to ensure all aquaculture operations are appropriately managed in Field Friendly.

What you’ll do:

  • Provide support for teaching, including practical demonstrations, transport of and housing species required for research.
  • Conduct bacterial monitoring for site in accordance with biosecurity permits.
  • Provide support and delivery of ethics applications, biosecurity and permits and liaising with external stakeholders as necessary.
  • Conduct regular auditing and compliance checks of all aquaculture operations for compliance.
  • Assist Project and teaching Leads with aquaculture husbandry as needed.

What we’re looking for:

  • Degree level qualification in aquaculture or a relevant field or at least three years’ work experience or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage aquatic culture systems, and the ability to identify and rectify variances in established protocols.
  • Ability to assist with research experiments, adhere to strict laboratory protocols, problem solve, provide solutions and take direction within a complex research environment.
  • A commitment to ensuring confidentiality and protection of Intellectual Property, and a commitment to the University’s values.
  • Willingness to be on call to assist with out of hours coverage and emergency backup for the aquarium and to work weekends on a roster basis.

Salary details

Appointment to this role will be at HEO 6 and will have a total remuneration package of up to $113,029 comprising base salary within the range of $89,091 to $96,606 plus 17% superannuation.
