  • Based at the Melbourne CBD or Bundoora campus, but may be required to work and/or be based at other campuses of the University

About You
The position of Academic Skills Advisor is situated within an interdisciplinary team and is responsible for enhancing students’ academic outcomes in academic literacy, study skills, mathematics, and science to meet the needs of RMIT’s diverse student cohort.
This position develops, implements, and evaluates a range of activities that build the capacity of students’ academic literacy, mathematics, science and study skills. This includes the development and delivery of accessible and interactive digital resources, one-on-one appointments, study hubs, and embedded workshops.
The position contributes to the delivery of the Skills Immersion Model, using BI digital intelligence insights on student demographics and risk factors, as well as input from educators to improve student success by providing streamlined access to study support services.

To be successful in this position, you will have:

  • Demonstrated understanding of trends and issues in academic study support practices in a tertiary learning environment, with specialist knowledge of one or more of the following: academic literacy, English as an additional language, mathematics, science and study skills.

  • Ability to apply critical thinking and data analysis to make informed recommendations regarding services, and to take responsibility for achieving outcomes.

  • Understanding of learning design principles and online pedagogy, along with technologies and tools that deliver digital learning content.

  • Demonstrated experience in the design and delivery of academic skills programs and learning support to students from a diverse range of backgrounds and disciplines within a tertiary environment.

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal skills and project management skills, specifically the ability to prioritise and deliver agreed outcomes within deadlines.

  • Demonstrated ability to work constructively as a member of a team and to initiate, develop and negotiate effective relationships with clients, including students.

  • Demonstrated experience in using data-driven, evidence-based decisions and analytics to demonstrate value and impact

Please Note: Appointment to this position is subject to passing a Working with Children and National Police Check.

About the Portfolio

The Education Portfolio leads the planning and implementation of the University’s strategies related to RMIT’s academic programs and the student experience.

The Portfolio is responsible for:

  • development and implementation of the Education Plan in accordance with University strategy as it relates to best practice in learning and teaching, student experience and academic staffing

  • oversight of quality assurance for RMIT programs and their contribution to the development of improved outcomes for students and partners

  • development and implementation of policy relating to academic profile and its impact on academic programs and staff

  • leadership and management of relevant projects deemed as priorities in the RMIT Strategic Plan and University Annual Operating Plan

  • provision of resources and services that support academic endeavour through the RMIT University Library

  • identifying and planning for administrative and support services to meet the needs of different student cohorts, on and offshore, across the student life cycle

  • promoting access to Vocational Education and Higher Education by students from diverse backgrounds and targeted equity groups

  • developing and maintaining systems, processes and procedures related to the student record.
