Northern Health are seeking applications from motivated and suitably experienced lawyers to join the Legal Department.
About Northern Health:
Northern Health is the major provider of acute, maternity, sub-acute, mental health, specialist, community and home-based services in Melbourne’s rapidly growing outer north.
Services are provided through our five main campuses:
Northern Hospital Epping, Broadmeadows Hospital, Bundoora Centre, Craigieburn Centre, and Kilmore District Hospital. In addition, Mental Health Services are provided at Epping, Broadmeadows, Jacana, Preston, Mill Park and Coburg.
About the Role:
Northern Health is seeking a talented and motivated lawyer with 2-5 years of post-admission experience to join our legal team. In this role, you will gain hands-on experience across a broad range of legal areas while working closely with the Director of Legal Services, senior management, clinicians, and hospital administration.

You will work on a variety of matters, including medical law, employment law, contracts, and more. The Legal Counsel reports to and will have the opportunity to be mentored and trained by the Director of Legal Services to deliver legal services required by Northern Health. As a key member of the Legal Department, the Legal Counsel works with a small team reporting to the Director of Legal Services who reports to the Chief Legal Officer. Responsible for all legal services required to support Northern Health’s functions, the Legal Counsel will:
- Assist the Director of Legal Services within the areas of medical negligence claims, coronial investigations, contract law and employment law.
- Assessment, review and conduct of matters within the identified practice areas.
- Represent (or coordinate the representation) of Northern Health in courts and tribunals including the Coroners Court of Victoria.
- Coordinate and ensure legislative compliance.
- Liaise with the VMIA, other external and internal stakeholders.
To be successful in this role you will have:
- Current Victorian legal practising certificate.
- At least 2-5 years’ practicing experience.
- A clear understanding of public sector duties and obligations.
- Ability to work on legally challenging and factually complex matters.
- Strong attention to detail and excellent written and verbal skills.
- Strong interpersonal and negotiation skills, including the ability to work collaboratively with a range of professional, medical and allied health staff and representatives of external agencies.
- Demonstrated ability to provide practical and timely legal advice, manage competing priorities and tight deadlines with a positive, ‘can do’ approach.
- Demonstrated enthusiasm for innovative approaches to legal practice and the ability to draw on technological solutions to improve and enhance legal practice.
- High standards of integrity, ethics, confidentiality and discretion.
