Description:

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is looking to fill several Azure Cloud Engineer roles in our Technology and Security Division (TSD). These are permanent roles at the APS 6 and EL 1 classification levels.

About the roles

A Cloud Engineer is responsible for the development, maintenance and support of the ABS’s public cloud infrastructure and systems. By designing, developing and leveraging engineering tools and processes they effectively provision, install, configure and operate public cloud services, as well as provide expert advice and support for cloud systems in collaboration with broader development teams.

As an Azure Cloud Engineer in the ABS, your responsibilities may include:

Responsibilities include:

  • leading or supporting the technical design, implementation and operation of foundational public cloud architectures and services, including planning, requirements, development, testing and quality assurance
  • developing and maintaining secure cloud solutions in accordance with established good practices and patterns
  • developing repeatable processes through scripting and automation to allow the timely and efficient deployment of public cloud services
  • consulting with business and technical stakeholders to perform requirements gathering and implement solutions to satisfy those requirements
  • providing expert advice with regards to the adoption and use of public cloud services
  • troubleshooting incidents, identify root cause, resolve, and document problems, and implement preventive measures
  • preparing and maintaining appropriate documentation on good practices and strategies regarding application deployment, infrastructure maintenance, and general operations
  • preparing, maintaining, and following appropriate operational documentation (e.g. Standard Operating Procedures)
  • proactively maintaining an understanding of corporate ICT infrastructure and systems
  • mentoring and possible staff management.

As an EL1, in addition to the above, you will:

  • lead the delivery of outcomes in support of the team’s Forward Work Program
  • undertake more complex tasks and contribute to the strategic direction of the team
  • be expected to provide coaching and training to less experienced staff.

What we are looking for (selection criteria)

To be considered for an Azure Cloud Engineer position, you should have most or all of the following skills, qualities and experience:

  • a proven ability to implement end-to-end solutions that incorporate process, technology and security elements by working with native cloud services and leveraging automation tools
  • demonstrated experience with some or all of the following:
    • Microsoft Azure – General Platform & Service Knowledge
    • Identity Management (Entra ID)
    • DevOps (GitLab, Azure DevOps)
    • Scripting (PowerShell, Python, TypeScript)
    • Infrastructure-as-Code (ARM, Bicep, Terraform)
    • Orchestration and Automation (Azure Functions)
  • a proven ability to work with multiple stakeholders and multi-disciplinary teams by fostering positive working relationships using well-developed communication skills
  • a proven ability to document and communicate technically complex subject matter to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • demonstrated experience in staff management and/or technical mentoring.

To be considered for an EL1 Cloud Engineer position you will need significant cloud systems engineering experience and/or technical leadership in an enterprise context.
