We are seeking an enthusiastic, outcomes-focussed professional to form part of the Great Barrier Reef Science for Management team.
This position is responsible for supporting the Reef Authority’s contributions to, and use of, ecosystem health information – particularly in relation to the Reef 2050 Integrated Monitoring and Reporting Program, Corporate Plan, Reef 2050 Water Quality Improvement Plan and the whole-of-government Integrated Paddock to Reef Monitoring Program. This includes interpretation and synthesis of marine monitoring results in a Reef management context and clearly communicating results, key issues and opportunities across relevant topic areas.
This position will also coordinate and provide high-level professional advice to Managers on ecosystem conditions and trends and identify opportunities to improve resilience-based management of key habitats. We are seeking an individual who can multi-task, provide objective advice and connect with a wide range of audiences through clear and concise written and oral communication.
The key duties of the position include:- Plan, lead and manage reef monitoring projects to a high standard (within budget, deadlines and risk-based assessment) including contract management, committee and symposium organisation, leading discussion and contributing advice to policy, strategies and plans.
- Review, analyse, interpret and synthesise relevant data and scientific reports on ecosystem health and water quality to inform Reef report cards, Paddock to Reef Integrated Monitoring and Modelling Program partners and marine park management.
- Contribute to the preparation of high-quality science communication including peer-review publications, dashboards, data management systems, and information products for government and stakeholders.
- Report and provide expert advice to Senior Management on ecosystem resilience, risks to the Reef and implementation of the Reef 2050 Water Quality Improvement Program and the Reef 2050 Integrated Monitoring and Reporting program, particularly as it relates to monitoring results and management guidance.
- Provide coordination support to engage and consult with partners, internal and external stakeholders including government, scientists, community and Traditional Owners, to support the delivery of the Reef Authority’s legislative objectives and corporate priorities. Engagement with stakeholders may require travel to regional areas by car and air.
To succeed in this role, you will bring:
- Experience as a Project Manager with a focus on marine science and water quality contexts.
- Expertise in evidence-based interpretation and synthesis of science for management, ideally in the marine environment.
- Excellent communication skills.

Essential requirements
- Tertiary qualifications in environmental science, marine science, or related disciplines.
- Demonstrated experience in peer review processes, scientific publications, spatial interpretation and communication.
- Hold and be able to maintain a current Queensland drivers’ licence.
Desirable qualifications or equivalent experience
- The ability to travel within Queensland and the Great Barrier Reef and to major centres (e.g. Brisbane and Canberra as required).
- Minimum dive qualification of Dive Master or ADAS Part 1 Diver (or training to AS/NZS 2815.1) or equivalent and maintain training requirements as per AS/NZS 2299.1:2015 Occupational diving operations – Standard operational practice
