The Role
This Senior Formulation Chemist role executes and ensures the delivery of our upcoming NPD pipeline as well as the ongoing production and maintenance of our existing products across all categories for all brands under the Go-To business. The Senior Formulation Chemist role is involved across all stages of the development process including ideation, formulation, stability, safety and efficacy testing and scale up to manufacture. It is an inherently cross-functional position which will work closely with both internal and external stakeholders.
Responsibilities
Manage the development of new product formulations from concept to production by taking responsibility for the key requirements of product safety, efficacy and consumer expectations are met through:
- Ideation and innovation of new product concepts
- Input into Briefs including review of the market, analysis of competitor products, benchmarking, COGS and project budget estimates, risk assessments and proposal of claims and clinical trials
- Formulation of New Products to meet Briefs including Active Ingredient selection, Base formula development and fragrancing.
- Sourcing of all required Raw Materials for Lab Batches and small scale Pilots
- Collaboration and management of our contract formulation and manufacturing partners
- Ensure Product Stability through a range of physical tests and investigate ways to accelerate instability to speed up development
- Ensure Product Safety through sensitization and irritation studies as well as microbiological tests
- Ensure Product Efficacy through in-house and third party clinical trials
- Ensure Product Feasibility by developing products that meet target COGS and margins
- Formulate products to meet the regulatory requirements of local and international markets
- Ensure the product is suitable for large scale manufacture throughout development and support the Scale Up and Process Validation at our manufacturing sites
- Generation of all technical and formula related information including claims substantiation, LOI, specifications and formula and process summaries
- Providing Technical support for our internal team leading up to and throughout launch
- Support the manufacturing of cosmetic products in a production facility, conducting scale-up studies, and overseeing production batches.
- Ensuring compliance with quality, safety, and regulatory standards while troubleshooting manufacturing issues and optimising processes.
- Collaborating with cross-functional teams to improve efficiency, apply GMP guidelines, validate equipment, and manage raw material specifications for large-scale production.
- Support existing products in our range to ensure that they remain relevant, are simplified and efficient in terms of costs, sourcing, manufacturing and quality through:
- Execution of the Raw Material Alternatives/Assessment process
- Update of any manufacturing masterbatch documents and specifications
- Support of internal Quality testing and investigations as required
- Reformulation of existing products
- Technical Support for Customer Service
- Support change of manufacturing sites
- Supervise batch manufacturing and production
As a senior member of the Formulations Team, the Senior Formulation Chemist is required to support other members of the Formulations Team with experience and skills through:
- Management of key internal stakeholders including the Marketing and Production Teams as well as external stakeholders such as Ingredient Suppliers and Contract Manufacturers
- Improvement of internal processes and creation/updates of SOPs
- Advise systems and processes for laboratory management
- Sharing of knowledge and experience to formulation team as well as the wider business
- Mentoring and coaching of Formulation Chemists in the Research and Development team on their product development and research activities.
- Your Background
- A Masters degree in Chemistry or related discipline
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in cosmetic chemistry and formulation
- Direct experience formulating natural skincare products and/or SPF products and delivering them to market
- Experience in a production environment with strong understanding of Scale Up and Process Validations
- Experience is meeting TGA regulatory requirements would be advantageous
- Experience in Project Management
- Advanced knowledge of Skincare formulation
- Knowledge of regulatory restrictions across global markets
- Extensive knowledge of stability, safety and efficacy testing
- Up to date with the latest advances in the industry
- Knowledge of Quality systems and standards
The Important Bits
This role is full time and based in Sydney. (Hybrid working policy)
Salary $85,000 + Super per annum
