Indigenous Business Australia (IBA) recently celebrated the historic passing of a legislative amendment to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Act 2005. This amendment significantly enhances IBA's ability to leverage capital, thereby supporting more Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in achieving their dreams of home ownership, business enterprise, and community investment.
The amendment aligns with the Government's directive for IBA to expand its remit and play a more substantial role in delivering economic independence for First Nations people in Australia. To effectively fulfill this expanded mandate, the IBA Board recognises the need for strong leadership and strategic vision.
Consequently, First People Recruitment Solutions are proud to be partnering with IBA and their Board in going back to market to recruit a Chief Executive Officer who can drive this transformative agenda forward, ensuring that IBA can maximise its impact and deliver on its enhanced objectives.
This is an Identified role which requires meeting the following two criterion:
- an understanding of the issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
- an ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people

IBA's objective is to provide quality leadership in facilitating and enabling Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander engagement in the wider economy.
IBA's principal legislative basis is the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Act 2005 ( ATSI Act ) under which IBA is established, to:
- assist and enhance Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander self-management and economic self-sufficiency
- advance the commercial and economic interests of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander persons
The Chief Executive Officer is responsible for:
- representing and advocating IBA's interests in all relevant public and private forums as required by the Board
- providing advice and support to the Chair and the Board as required
- ensuring that IBA's business is conducted in accordance with the ATSI Act and the PGPA Act
- the development, implementation and management of IBA's business plan, human resources policies and procedures, risk assessment, reporting and management processes
- the coordination of IBA's annual reporting obligations under the ATSI Act and other Commonwealth legislation
- maintaining an appropriately structured management team, appointed in consultation with the Board, to assist you in effective implementation of the Board's strategic plans and initiatives
- providing leadership to IBA's management team and delegating administrative and managerial functions and tasks to, and supervising and managing, that team.
Required Skills, Attributes and Experience
- Experience gained within banking, asset management or a relevant financial services environment, including a technical understanding of the legal and regulatory environment, responsibilities and detail of providing financial products and services
- will be a transformational leader with a visionary mindset, capable of driving change and fostering innovation
- bring a deep understanding of, and sensitivity to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
- will be an experienced negotiator with gravitas and the ability to be a strong advocate of IBA who is comfortable in diplomatically engaging politicians and bureaucrats, commercial leaders and various community groups.
- A resilient custodian of strategic direction with demonstrated experience of driving growth in a similar organisational context
- will be an influential leader with exceptional communication skills, including demonstrated high level interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills
- will bring demonstrable advocacy experience and the ability to establish highly productive relationships with stakeholders and thought leaders across business, government, and the community
The CEO will have:
- a vision for growth
- proven ability to develop and implement strategic plans to deliver organisational objectives
- leadership experience in a relevant business, government department, or community group
- an understanding of the challenges of leading a large workforce across a number of dispersed locations
- and experience in working with advisory boards and boards of directors.
- experience in overseeing executive teams, organisational budgets and annual report obligations similar in nature and size to IBA
