Are you passionate about supporting individuals affected by alcohol and substance use? Kalano is seeking dedicated Support Workers to join our Sobering Up Shelter (SUS) and Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD) Venndale Residential Rehabilitation teams.
About the Roles:
Our SUS Support Workers provide care and supervision to individuals at the Katherine Sobering Up Shelter, ensuring their safety and well-being until the effects of alcohol and substances subside.
Our AOD Support Workers assist participants at Venndale Rehabilitation Service, focusing on after-hours support, welfare, and engagement in daily living activities to aid their recovery journey.
Key Responsibilities:
✅ Provide direct care and support to individuals affected by alcohol and substance use
✅ Conduct assessments and referrals to additional support services
✅ Maintain a harm prevention approach and apply appropriate interventions
✅ Assist with general cleaning, meal preparation, laundry, and daily tasks
✅ Maintain accurate records and complete case notes
✅ Respond to emergency situations, provide immediate intervention and ensure a safe environment
We are looking for compassionate and culturally aware individuals with:
✅ Experience working with Indigenous people and communities
✅ Strong communication, problem-solving, and conflict resolution skills
✅ Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
Supporting individuals who are under the influence of alcohol or other substances requires patience, awareness, and a strong focus on safety. As a Support Worker, you will:
✅ Use de-escalation techniques to manage challenging behaviours
✅ Recognize early signs of distress or medical concerns and take appropriate action
✅ Follow strict safety protocols, including emergency response procedures
✅ Work collaboratively with team members to ensure a secure environment
✅ Engage with external services (e.g., police, paramedics) when necessary
✅ Be trained in de-escalation and risk management to handle difficult situations calmly and professionally
Qualifications & Requirements:
- Certificate IV in Alcohol & Other Drugs (or willingness to obtain)
- Relevant qualifications in Community Services or Mental Health (desirable)
- First Aid Certificate (or willingness to obtain)
- De-escalation Training (or willingness to obtain)
- Current NT Driver’s Licence – Must be provided prior to commencement
- NT Working With Children’s Clearance (Ochre Card) – Must be provided prior to commencement
- National Police Check (within 2months old) – must be provided prior to commencement
Remuneration package:
Employment Type : Casual
Wage: From $27.50 per hour, plus 25% casual loading and other applicable allowances and penalties.
Locations:
- Venndale Rehabilitation Centre – 20 Bruce Road, Katherine NT 0850 (30km south of Katherine)
- Sobering Up Shelter – 25 Giles Street, Katherine NT 0850
Hours of work:
Casual hours of up to 37.5hours per week, working rostered and fill-in shifts.
Working a variety of afternoon/evening, night and weekend shifts.
- Afternoon/evening shifts commencing from 3pm until midnight
- Night shifts commencing from 11pm until 8am
- Weekend day shifts between 7am and 7pm
All shifts, including night/overnight are active shifts that require constant supervision and assistance to clients.
