About You

As our Road Safety Officer, you will play a vital role in improving road safety and managing traffic engineering projects. Your responsibilities will include investigating customer requests related to road network operations, signage, linemarking, parking, and road safety, as well as planning, recommending, and managing traffic engineering projects to meet corporate objectives. This position requires advanced skills and knowledge relevant to the field.

Key Responsibilities

  • Customer Inquiry Management: Prioritise, assess, and prepare recommendations for traffic and road safety-related customer inquiries, including topics like road network operations, signage, linemarking, and parking. Coordinate and follow through on relevant works.
  • Expert Advice & Reporting: Provide written and verbal expert advice on road safety and traffic engineering matters, both internally (including junior officers) and externally. Prepare detailed reports, recommendations, and correspondence.
  • Stakeholder Coordination: Engage with external stakeholders such as government agencies, contractors, consultants, event managers, and community groups to ensure the performance and quality of traffic and road safety projects.
  • Technical Operations: Undertake field activities requiring initiative and judgment in applying established principles, including road safety audits, speed limit reviews, data analysis, and advising on improvements.
  • Road Safety Projects & Campaigns: Contribute to the development and implementation of local road safety projects and campaigns. Collaborate with local road safety partners to deliver impactful safety messages.
  • Customer Service & Communication: Foster strong relationships with the public, ratepayers, and external organisations to enhance community involvement and ownership of road safety issues.
  • Policy Development: Assist in the creation and refinement of policies and procedures relevant to road safety and traffic management.

The T ransport and Drainage Planning Branch (TDP) is part of the Infrastructure Services Group (ISG). We ensure that the Toowoomba Region’s infrastructure networks are well-planned, safe, and functional. TDP consists of six sections: Asset Management, Drainage Planning, Transport Planning, Design and Survey, Road Operations, and Aerodrome Operations.

How to be successful in this position

  • Degree or Associate Degree in Engineering, Behavioral Science or a relevant field from a recognised tertiary institution, with relevant experience.
  • WH&S Competency Card – Construction Industry
  • TMR working in Proximity to Traffic Awareness (Desirable)
  • Manual of Unitform Traffic control Devices Traffic Management Design (Desirable)
  • Road Safety Auditor or Senior Road Safety Auditor
  • ‘C’ Class Driver’s Licence
