Meteorologists deliver impact and value through customer centred products and solutions designed to change behaviours that enhance our everyday lives and safety. This includes diagnosing the state of the atmosphere and oceans, producing forecasts and warnings, and communicating the impact of these products with a wide variety of customers and industries.

  • analyse, and interpret meteorological data sources and numerical weather prediction model output to forecast atmospheric conditions.

Learn from some of Australia's leading scientists as you develop a deep knowledge of services for severe weather, marine and Antarctic environments, climate, water and volcanic ash prediction. A day in this role can include preparing and communicating weather forecasts for the public as well as specific users such as the emergency services sector.

Stage 1
As a Graduate Meteorologist you will begin your career by undertaking a paid ten-month Graduate Diploma at the Bureau's Training Centre in Broadmeadows, Melbourne. Working hours will be 9 am-5 pm, Monday to Friday commencing in late January and finishing in mid-November.

• Formal training, learning and development opportunities.
• Access to a wide mentoring and support network that can provide valuable exposure to the day-to-day aspects of being an operational meteorologist as well as insights into the Bureau's strategy.

Stage 2
On successful completion of the course, you will be qualified as an entry-level Meteorologist and will undertake job readiness training at one or more of the Bureau's operational sites, located in capital cities and Australian Defence Force (ADF) bases in regional areas. Possible relocation post-course completion forms part of this process.

Stage 3
Once you have met the performance expectations of an operational Meteorologist, you will take on more responsibility and independence. You will continue to receive close supervision and engage with opportunities to develop on-the-job in operational and non-operational roles, gaining experience across the discipline in many of the Bureau's business areas. It is typical for operational meteorologists to perform duties in a shift working environment, and you may be required to work nightshift. A willingness to relocate and rotate to other disciplines or areas of the business is an essential part of your training and development.

Eligibility
  • Australian Citizenship
  • An undergraduate or postgraduate degree in science, engineering or other field with relevant studies in physics to first year level, and applied mathematics to second year level.
  • Copies of your academic transcripts, both undergraduate and postgraduate, must be submitted as part of your online application via the 'Optional Upload' section in the application form.
  • Applicants that studied overseas should refer to the National Office of Overseas Skills Recognition website before applying.
  • Some positions include a condition of employment that applicants will successfully undergo a security clearance vetting process, and obtain, and maintain, the requisite security clearance for the duration of their employment with the Bureau. Participants may be offered an opportunity to commence the security clearance vetting process prior to completion of the graduate program.
