NHW is the major regional health service and specialist referral facility for Northeast Victoria. It serves a population of approximately 90,000, performs over 6,500 procedures a year and has over 19,000 inpatient episodes and 29,000 Emergency Department attendances a year and approximately 700 births per year. We have onsite radiology, pathology and blood bank service. NHW provides a wide range of acute specialist medical and surgical services, an emergency department, critical care unit (ICU, HDU, CCU), obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, specialised aged care, medical oncology services, community rehabilitation, inpatient, community, aged and psycho-geriatric mental health services.

Wangaratta is under three hours drive from Melbourne. It is in a magnificent rural setting with snow fields, rivers, vineyards, national parks and a host of recreational activities on offer. It has over 11 schools including private Catholic and Anglican schooling options for pre-year 12. It is within 45 minute drive to Albury which is a large rural city that has also has a regional airport.

Applications are invited for the position of Visiting Medical Officer – Paediatrics at Northeast Health Wangaratta. This position will provide services to NHW for Paediatric patients within the region. There is also the opportunity to join a busy private general surgical practice.

Paediatric experience in regional setting is preferred. However applicants who have recently attained their FRACP Paeds and have a demonstrated interest in regional health care are still encouraged to apply.

The University of Melbourne’s Rural Clinical School has a node located in Wangaratta with medical students completing their clinical studies at NHW and additional medical students rotate from Melbourne teaching hospitals.

Wangaratta is surrounded by beautiful countryside, the Alps and wineries, with a host of recreational and lifestyle choices on offer. It has excellent schools and is just 45 minutes from Albury or two and a half hours freeway driving from Melbourne.

You must have Registration with the Medical Board of Australia and Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons and appropriate experience. Specialist trainees approaching the end of their training are also encouraged to apply.
