The Role
As the Head Gardener you will be responsible for overseeing the maintenance and enhancement of all gardens, lawns and landscape areas within the Gabbinbar estate and nearby accommodation. The Head Gardener will lead a small team of gardeners, manage resources, plan seasonal planting, and ensure the garden's overall health and aesthetic appeal. Using your strong knowledge of lawn care, garden maintenance, and a genuine passion for beautiful, lush, impeccable outdoor spaces. Your experience in nurturing healthy lawns and managing seasonal garden tasks will ensure that the estate is visually appealing year-round, which is vitally important.
Work Schedule
Gabbinbar is a dynamic environment focused on delivering an exceptional experience to all who we interact with. As a seven day business your work hours may include weekends and public holidays, generally we see this role as a Monday-Friday position unless otherwise desired or business needs change.
Key Responsibilities:
- Maintain and care for lawns, plants, and garden beds, ensuring they are healthy and visually attractive
- Perform regular pruning, trimming, weeding, mowing and edging to keep garden spaces neat and tidy using equipment and machinery such as; lawn mowers, tractors, rakes, saws, shovels, hedge trimmers, axes and pruning saws
- Apply appropriate treatments such as fertilisation, aeration, and weed control to keep the lawn in optimal condition
- Monitor the sprinkler system to ensure it regularly waters the lawns and reset it as necessary, as well as water by hand when needed to maintain the health of the plants
- Some paint touch ups around the estate and in the homestead, when requested
- Cleaning of fixtures and structures around the estate
- A keen awareness of the condition of the estate; when walking around the estate keep an eye out for anything that may need attention
- Create a schedule for seasonal planting and lawn care, reporting on this quarterly a season ahead to your Team Leader and Venue Manager
- Ensure workspace and sheds are maintained in a clean and tidy manner
- Be available ‘on call’ outside work hours to solve issues or give advice. Back up for the Operations Manager with weekend on call duties.
Team Leader Responsibilities:
- Lead the Gardening Team, including creating the roster, approving timesheet accuracy and managing leave.
Conduct performance reviews and work with the HR management team for any formal behaviour management - Set daily goals for your team to complete allocated work tasks within their working hours, ensuring that even when you are on a day off the business goals and tasks are still being achieved in your absence
- Manage and organise resources - ensure all tools and resources are efficiently managed and effectively utilised during practices
- Ensure all team members work according to the Heritage General Exemption Certificate
- Ensure site work health and safety policies are adhered to and mentor any new or casual team members and contractors, including wearing all advised PPE.
Key Skills and Attributes
- Experience as a gardener, landscaper, groundskeeping, or similar occupation is advantageous, however a passion for gardening is most important.
- Willingness to complete a variety of mundane and difficult tasks with a positive attitude.
- Strong understanding of lawn care principles is advantageous.
- High attention to detail in performing tasks e.g. edging, hedging, etc.
- Trim and Cut Felled Trees (or willing to obtain).
- Drivers License (valid).
- First Aid Certificate (or willing to obtain).
- Reliable and hardworking.
- Ability to work well within a team and individually.
- Clear and friendly communication.
- Excellent time management skills.
