Primary objective
Undertake livestock biosecurity, health and welfare regulatory functions and compliance activities, including disease
investigations, surveillance and operations across the Northern Territory livestock industry.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Coordinate designated animal health, biosecurity and product integrity activities and monitor compliance with relevant
legislation in the region.
2. Provide advice and reporting in relation to animal biosecurity and product integrity issues in the region.
3. Undertake disease investigations and disease surveillance activities.
4. Plan, coordinate and conduct investigations related to legislation and compliance, including investigation of alleged
breaches.
5. Participate in emergency responses of animal, plant and aquatic pests or diseases.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Bachelor’s degree in agriculture, animal husbandry, animal bioscience or a relevant discipline.
2. Ability to support disease investigations and surveillance projects including data, specimen collection and field work
involving stock handling.
3. Basic knowledge of emergency management or emergency animal disease response.
4. Demonstrated sound oral communication and interpersonal skills, including negotiation and conflict resolution skills, and
the ability to interact effectively with various stakeholders.
5. Demonstrated sound analytical judgement, problem solving, and high level of investigation and research skills.
6. Demonstrated ability to operate within a team, as well as independently, and to work under pressure, make sound
judgements and prioritise workloads in a busy environment.
7. Ability to interpret and apply legislative frameworks, policies and procedures and exercise statutory responsibilities as
delegated.
8. NT Drivers Licence with 4WD skills (or ability to obtain).
Desirable
1. Experience in the use of firearms and farm chemicals in a safe and effective manner.
2. Ability to use computer and software programs including National Livestock Identification System equipment.
3. Sound understanding of the role of animal biosecurity and product integrity in the development and protection of primary
industries in the Northern Territory.
4. Previous knowledge and experience with livestock animal health, disease control, inspections and certification of stock
for market assurance purposes, interpretation and application of legislation, together with experience in extension and
regulatory programs in rural industries.
5. Completed or have the ability to complete Certificate IV – Government Investigations.
Further information
The Livestock Biosecurity Surveillance Officer will be appointed as an Inspector of Livestock under the NT Livestock Act
2008 and an Authorised Officer under the NT Animal Protection Act 2018 . A current driver’s licence and ability to drive a
manual 4WD, off road, and be willing and able to travel extensively across the Northern Territory in remote locations.
