Primary Objective
Provide expert legal advice relating to the prosecution of complex prosecutions. Provide representation for the prosecution before
all courts of the Northern Territory and the High Court of Australia in complex prosecutions, appeals and related matters. This is a
senior litigation position for an experienced advocate.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide expert legal advice relating to the prosecution of complex prosecutions.
2. Appear in complex trials, appeals and pleas before the Supreme Court.
3. Appear and/or junior in Court of Criminal Appeal proceedings.
4. Conduct committal proceedings and contested summary prosecutions, preliminary examinations and related proceedings
before the Local Court.
5. Appear in complex summary hearings as required.
6. Evaluate, screen and prepare briefs of evidence and recommend indictments in accordance with the Director’s guidelines.
7. Appropriately consult, liaise, inform and negotiate with defence counsel, victims, the police officer-in-charge, court staff
and the Witness Assistance Service.
8. Provide professional advice and support to other prosecutors and Police and promote a team environment. Act as a mentor
and provide guidance to less experienced prosecutors.
Selection Criteria
Essential
1. Admitted or eligible for admission as a barrister or solicitor of the High Court or of a Supreme Court of a State or Territory of
Australia.
2. Demonstrated experience and knowledge in criminal law and advocacy with the ability to provide expert legal advice together
with proven experience in the prosecution of complex matters including jury trials.
3. Demonstrated high-level knowledge of the DPP Guidelines and Prosecution Policy, the Criminal Code (NT) and related
legislation, and the procedures of the courts of the Northern Territory.
4. Good working knowledge of Uniform Evidence Law.
5. High level oral and written communication and negotiation skills with demonstrated ability to effectively engage, negotiate
and collaborate with other agencies, defence agencies, Courts, local communities, other external stakeholders and the general
public.
6. Ability to manage one's own legal practice in accordance with internal practices and procedures working with competing
demands under pressure.
7. An ability to interact effectively with people from diverse cultures together with an understanding of Aboriginal issues relevant
to prosecution services.
8. Hold (or have the capacity to obtain) a current Working with Children Clearance (Ochre Card).

The successful applicant will be required to undergo a criminal history check including a Fingerprint Scan and Name Check. A
criminal history will not exclude an applicant from this position unless it is a relevant criminal history. The successful applicant will
need to be available for intrastate travel for court circuits including in light aircraft, to work flexible hours and may from time to
time be required to be located at sites outside of the main office (eg Local Court).
