Primary objective
As a senior member of the School Leadership Team, provide initiative and educational leadership in administration, planning,
development and evaluation of policy, Curriculum and Pedagogy, wellbeing and educational programs. The Assistant
Principal inspires students, staff and community members to optimise the learning of all students, through promoting
continuous improvement.
Context statement
Howard Springs School is inclusive, ranging from Preschool to year six. We are located in Darwin’s rural area and have a
strong commitment to community. Our teachers work as a Professional Learning Community that embraces challenge, and
supports and empowers one another to achieve a high standard of learning for all. We are committed to quality educational
outcomes, especially in literacy and numeracy. The school has a strong focus on wellbeing and implements the School Wide
Positive Behaviour framework. We adopt a collaborative planning approach and implement a blend of explicit instruction.
Our current student enrolment is approximately 330.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Mentor and coach staff in the analysis of data and delivery of effective educational programs to meet the needs of all
students.
2. Lead the development of staff and the implementation of teaching, learning and assessment through collaboration with
other school leaders to achieve the goals of the Annual Strategic Improvement Plan.
3. Participate in the formulation and review of school policies, procedures and strategic plans, to achieve educational
outcomes and strategic goals.
4. Collaborate with Special Education Teacher and teachers to manage Students Services and Targeted-Funded Student
Support programs to ensure all students have programs that meet their learning needs.
5. Lead teachers in the development of their curriculum knowledge and the delivery of research-based pedagogy.
6. Lead the organisation of whole school events in collaboration with the community and staff.
7. Manage the human resources to ensure quality education services.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Demonstrated successful experience in the implementation of the primary curriculum, pedagogy, assessment, confirming,
reporting procedures and data analysis in line with whole school approaches.
2. Demonstrate skills and knowledge in the implementation of behaviour management processes based on social justice,
intervention programs based on data analysis and programs for students with Special Education needs.
3. Demonstrated ability to manage, in partnership with the School Leadership Team, innovation and change to achieve
improvement across the school in line with department goals and Strategic Framework.
4. Ability to use effective interpersonal skills to work collaboratively to build teams, working with staff to improve capacity
using a range of leadership styles and the implementation of performance enhancement processes.
5. Demonstrated ability to build a shared culture of high expectations, while developing and maintaining effective
interpersonal and cross-cultural relationships within and beyond the HSPS community.
Desirable
1. Post graduate qualification in educational leadership or equivalent.
