Primary objective
Directly manage, lead, train and supervise a team of staff and oversee case management, compliance, surveillance and assessment
activities.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. As a statutory officer, supervise a team of Probation and Parole Officers to provide a range of services to the Courts and Parole Board
ensuring compliance with requirements of legislation and department policy and procedures.
2. Ensure an appropriate standard of offender management is undertaken in compliance with relevant legislation, organisational
procedures and professional standards.
3. Support, coach and train team, undertake performance management identifying appropriate training and development (as part of the
Performance Management System).
4. Review and assess Probation and Parole Officers’ evidence of competence in material submitted towards units of the Certificate IV
in Correctional Practice and the Career Progression Scheme.
5. Identify and respond appropriately to risks arising from offender management, including those which may occur out of office hours
whilst undertaking on-call duties. Record and report risk incidents in accordance with procedures.
6. Engage with, and work collaboratively with key stakeholders including Courts, Government Departments, non-government and
community organisations to optimise offender management and improve service delivery.
7. Initiate and develop justice and offender related initiatives in the region using a community development approach.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Certificate IV in Correctional Practice or recognised equivalent must be completed within the first 12 months of employment.
2. Demonstrated ability to lead and supervise a team to deliver required outcomes within a criminal justice or statutory environment.
3. Demonstrated experience in training, mentoring, coaching and performance management of staff with emphasis on risk management
and compliance with legislation, policies and procedures.
4. Highly developed interpersonal skills with the ability to build relationships and work collaboratively and negotiate and manage
conflict with staff, clients and stakeholders.
5. Demonstrated ability to manage a caseload of complex and difficult cases with a commitment to participative case management.
6. Demonstrated ability to manage operational service delivery, including the allocation of tasks and resources, performance monitoring
and reporting.
7. Strong written and verbal skills including experience of writing, vetting and assessing complex reports for predominately statutory
audiences, and providing constructive feedback to others.
8. Demonstrated understanding of and sensitivity to Aboriginal cultural issues with the ability to interact effectively with people of
diverse cultures.
Desirable
1. Tertiary qualifications in management, social or behavioural science or criminology.
