Central Gippsland Health (CGH) is a sub-regional health service and the major provider of health and aged care services in the Wellington Shire. CGH is located in the City of Sale which is 215 km east of Melbourne. The City of Sale is an ideal access point for the magnificent Gippsland Lakes, 90 Mile Beach and the Victorian Alps.

CGH provides acute care as part of an integrated service delivery model across Wellington Shire and beyond. The service provides beds across three campuses (Sale, Maffra and Heyfield). Acute services include a full-time emergency department, critical care unit, neonatal critical care unit, three operating theatres, day procedure unit, oncology and dialysis services in addition to general medical and services and sub-acute services including rehabilitation.

CGH is also a leading teaching hospital, affiliated with Monash University's School of Rural Health and provides placements and clinical experience for students.

About Department

This position is within a team of three other Unaccredited Surgical Registrars, one Accredited Surgical Registrar, HMO and Interns who manage surgical patients under the supervision of four Consultant Surgeons.

About the Role

The person in this position will work in a highly collaborative manner with the broader surgical unit, as well as with other members of the Health Service. They will actively participate in the planning, coordination, evaluation and implementation of a range of clinical interventions that supports reflective, evidence-based practice.

Externally, the position holder will professionally liaise with a network of healthcare providers and agencies.

Duties

  • Clinical management of general surgical patients and speciality surgical patients (ENT, Urology, Ophthalmology, Orthopaedic and emergency O&G), including appropriate history taking, physical examination, investigation, assessment, and care planning and coordination.

  • Regularly review patient care objectives, physical and mental status, including the development and communication of a discharge plan commencing from the time of admission.

  • Thoroughly and promptly document in the medical record patient information obtained from various sources, in an appropriate and ongoing manner, including initial assessment, treatment, clinical progress and investigations; and to succinctly record this in the discharge summary at the time of discharge. Discharge summaries are to be completed on day of discharge and a copy provided to the patient.

  • Participate in operating theatre sessions as required including endoscopy sessions, primarily as a surgical assistant; perform procedures under supervision as appropriate, but with increasing independence over time.

  • Accept referrals to review patients and attend to reviews promptly in the required timeframe to assist the Health Service to meet patient care benchmarks.


Qualifications, Skills and Experience

  • Demonstrated interest in Surgery as a Career Pathway

  • AHPRA Registration

  • Minimum Post Graduate Year 3

  • Demonstrated effort to sit Generic Surgical Science Examination (GSSE) or completed

  • Uphold Central Gippsland Health Values
