An exciting opportunity has become available for a Permanent Emergency Medicine Staff Specialist at Shellharbour Hospital.

The Emergency Medicine Staff Specialist will proactively provide expert medical assessment and management of patients and the provision of optimal emergency care for Shellharbour Hospital in line with the strategies as determined by the Clinical Services Plan. The position also involves JMO and student teaching and participation in service development for Emergency Medicine. Involvement in continuing medical education, peer review and quality improvement are also key requirements.

New Shellharbour Hospital and Integrated Services Project

The new Shellharbour Hospital and Integrated Services Project commenced with $780 Million in funding to deliver new and improved health facilities for the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District population. The new Shellharbour Hospital will provide the local community with:

  • An expanded emergency department
  • Specialised elective surgery services
  • Rehabilitation and aged care services
  • Acute medical services
  • Expanded mental health services
  • Maternity services including midwifery-led clinics, doctor-led clinics, midwifery group practice (MGP) clinics and pre and post natal services. Birthing will remain at Wollongong Hospital due to the specialist services and staff that are required to maintain a safe birthing facility.
  • New drug and alcohol unit
  • Renal dialysis
  • Outpatients care services
  • Car parking and improved public transport links

This new hospital will play a significant role in the District’s service network and will be a much larger and more capable hospital. It will:

  • Become the District’s specialist elective surgical services centre with state-of-the-art theatres
  • Continue to be the District’s centre for specialist inpatient mental health care
  • Cater for the growing community through a significant increase in size and capacity
