We are seeking a Financial Accountant to join our team of professionals in the Finance and Business Services Directorate, where you’ll manage the financial integrity and compliance of JCU’s controlled entities. - Full-time, continuing position
- Based at the Townsville Bebegu Yumba campus, Douglas
- HEWL 8: $105,790 - $121,481 per annum (3% increase in July and 2.75% in December)

ABOUT THE ROLE
As part of the Treasury and Corporate Finance team, you will ensure accurate financial reporting, maintain statutory compliance, and oversee taxation obligations for JCU’s controlled entities, including those operating a veterinary clinic, childcares, student support services and medical services to name a few. Your work will play a key role in risk mitigation, budgetary support, and financial oversight, contributing to their long-term sustainability.
You will oversee reconciliations to ensure the accuracy of financial and taxation records. You will manage audit processes, ensuring compliance with accounting standards and regulations while providing expert financial and taxation advice to resolve complex queries and mitigate risks. Your ability to deliver clear financial insights will support strategic decision-making within JCU’s controlled entities, and your proactive approach will drive continuous improvement in financial policies, processes, and systems.
QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
- Postgraduate qualification (or progress toward one) in financial/business management, accounting or commerce.
- Current membership with a recognised professional accounting body (e.g., CPA Australia or Chartered Accountants ANZ)
- Proven experience in financial accounting or a similar role, with a detailed understanding and working knowledge of accounting standards, principles and practices.
- Highly developed analytical skills, with the ability to interpret complex data and financial information.
- Strong attention to detail, with a demonstrated commitment to accuracy and precision.
- Excellent organisational, problem-solving, and administrative skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities, meet deadlines, and exercise sound judgment and initiative.
- Highly developed communication, interpersonal and influencing skills, with proven ability to build relationships, consult with diverse stakeholders, and present complex financial information clearly and professionally.
