Description:
The Policy Officer, Urban Waterways position sits within the Urban Waterways team in the Catchment Programs and Rural Policy branch. The Urban Waterways team oversees governance and delivery of transformative programs for our iconic urban waterways, taking a collaborative approach to the complex issues of population growth and climate change to ensure our urban waterways are protected and valued by the community into the future. Underpinned by an understanding of waterways as living entities, the team also has responsibility for policy and legislative reforms that embed Traditional Owners in governance and decision-making for our urban waterways.
Drawing on policy and project management skills, this role will support the delivery of high profile urban waterway programs including Water is Life Traditional Owner Access to Water Roadmap: Outcome 1 - developing legislative proposals to recognise waterways as living entities; manage discrete projects relating to the Waterways of the West and Rivers of the Barwon (Barre Warre Yulluk) Action Plans; actively contribute to oversight of governance and implementation of Burndap Birrarung burndap umarkoo (the Yarra Strategic Plan); and support delivery of Urban Waterways grants programs.
The role provides a unique opportunity to work closely and collaboratively with internal stakeholders and other groups across government (including the Department of Transport and Planning), as well as engage with Traditional Owners and external agency partners to build upon community engagement, existing strategies and government programs for protecting and improving urban waterways and their values.
Specialist/Technical Expertise/Qualifications
- Tertiary qualification in science, natural resource management, urban planning, policy or law would be an advantage.
- Demonstrated experience engaging with Traditional Owner corporations and/or First Nations communities, including an understanding of First Nations and Traditional Owner issues and priorities.
- Experience using Engage Victoria is desirable
This is an ongoing position. The work location for this position is 8 Nicholson Street with hybrid work arrangements available.
