We are seeking a dedicated and skilled Senior Youth Mental Health Clinician to join our Menth Health Team.

Community Mental Health Services (CMHS) is an important part of the South Australian mental health system. We are committed to providing a specialist mental health service to our consumers.

About the role:

The Youth Mental Health stream works to provide high quality, evidence based mental health assessment, treatment, and support with navigating health services for young people aged 16 - 24 years old. The early identification, intervention, and prevention of mental health distress can help prevent the potential long-term impacts of mental illness, maximising the wellbeing and mental fitness of young people within the local community.

As one of two Senior Youth Clinicians in the Team, you will specifically be responsibility for the implementation, delivery, monitoring and evaluation of new Graduate Group therapy programs for young consumers who have already completed the Youth Mental Health Team's Dialectical Behaviour Therapy for Adolescents (6 month) program. These are young people who have experienced moderate to severe difficulties with regulation their emotions (including with emerging/diagnosed Borderline Personality Disorder) and/or who have engaged evidence-based treatment for self harming or suicidal behaviours.

The successful candidate will be responsible for coordination and delivery of a range of activities. This will include mental health and psychosocial assessments, treatment and care planning and reviews, individual and group therapeutic interventions, advocacy and liaison with other community service providers. They will also engage in the monitoring of service provision, psychometric data collection and usage, and service evaluation working alongside a dedicated Research Assistant, including evaluating treatment outcomes to inform service delivery and consumer treatment pathways. Working collaboratively with consumers and their families/carers, they may liaise closely with a network of government and non-government organisations. They will strive for maximising youth wellbeing, assisting stabilisation and recovery of mental health and building functional capacity for self-management. you will hold responsibility for managing a caseload of youth consumers while providing oversight of the Graduate Group programs. This Senior Clinician has additional opportunities for involvement with the Youth team, working closely with another Senior Youth Clinician. This may include involvement in the team referral management processes, clinical governance within the steam and the broader SCMHS acute stream, and responsibility for maintaining flow within the service.

Duties for this role include:

  • Establishment of Graduate Group programs.
  • Participating as an active member of the broader team leadership group.
  • Providing expert consultation and advice to the multi-disciplinary team in relation to appropriate psychological assessment and treatment methodologies with regard to difficult and complex cases.
  • Ensuring mechanisms are in place to support ongoing education where work and learning are integrated.
  • Leading clinical practice within the professional practice framework established by the Director of Nursing and/or lead a multidisciplinary team.

About you

  • A strong understanding of the unique developmental challenges and psychological needs of adolescents and young adults, as well as familiarity with evidence-based assessment and intervention approaches for young people who have high or complex needs.
  • Ability to engage and work collaboratively with youth, families/carers, other agencies and community services.
  • Advanced skills in undertaking a comprehensive bio-psychosocial assessment including risk assessments of consumers presenting with high or complex needs.
  • Awareness and sensitivity to cultural, ethnic, and social diversity when working with youth and families from varying backgrounds.
  • Willingness to engage in ongoing professional development, attend workshops, training, and stay up to date with the latest research and practices in youth mental health and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy.
  • (AHP3) An appropriate degree or equivalent qualification which gives eligibility for full membership of the Australian Association of Social Workers; OR
  • An appropriate degree or equivalent qualification which entitles registration as an Occupational Therapist with the Occupational Therapy Board of Australia; OR
  • Appropriate degree or equivalent qualification recognised by the Psychology Board of Australia (PsyBA) and general registration with the PsyBA with an endorsed area of Practice in Clinical Psychology; and
  • Hold approved supervisor status with the PsyBA at all levels of supervision.
  • (RN3) Registered as a Nurse by the Nursing/Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) and who holds a current practicing certificate; and
  • Must be enrolled in an approved mental health course or hold a qualification in mental health practice.
