Salary range:

$69.58 per hour + superannuation.

The Role

Southern Ports is recruiting a casual Deckhand to join their team in Bunbury. The Deckhand will be responsible for ensuring the safe operation of the Pilot Launches in an effective and timely manner.

This vacancy is offered on a casual, On-call basis, with a minimum engagement of 4 hours per shift.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Ensure Port vessels are properly maintained, adequately fuelled and operational to meet the Port’s and regulatory requirements, SP policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Assist the Pilot Launch Master in achieving their objectives in servicing and maintaining the Pilot Launches.
  • Ensure regular maintenance/servicing of vessels is completed in appropriate timeframes.
  • Carry out general housekeeping of vessels to a high standard.
  • Ensure all machinery spaces are maintained in a clean/dry/oil-free condition.
  • Service and test all marine safety equipment to comply with regulatory requirements.
  • Perform Emergency Response functions and participate in Emergency Response training, exercises and drills.
  • Review and update procedures and ensure compliance with Safety Management System
  • Ensure general housekeeping of vessels is maintained to a high standard.

The Expertise

  • Essential:
    • Completed a course related to Occupational Health and Safety at Sea
    • Complete internal training to ensure competency in Pilot transfers.
    • Current WA Driver’s License
  • Highly Desirable:
    • Current Master
  • Experience of Marine Vessel Maintenance
  • Experience of Port Operations – Pilot launch/Tugs/Lines launch
  • Understanding & compliance with legislation relating to security and floating craft maintained by the Port.
  • Good working knowledge of principles and practices of OH&S
  • Strong problem solving skills
  • Ability to maintain a Maritime Security Identification Card (MSIC)
  • Be flexible and adaptable to the needs of the business

  • Have a current Australian driver’s licence
  • Be able to obtain and maintain a Maritime Security Identification Card
  • Pass a pre-employment medical assessment including drug and alcohol testing
  • Provide a National Police Certificate that is within a 6 month period.
