Watco Australia is a dynamic and growth focused organisation that is currently growing nationally. We have operations in Queensland, Western Australia and New South Wales. As a result, we have an opening for a Trainee Terminal Operator to join our New South Wales team in Port Kembla.
About The Role
The Terminal Operator forms an integral part of the locomotive train crew, working closely with the locomotive drivers to ensure safe and efficient train operations. This role encompasses a range of responsibilities, including shunt planning, executing shunting activities, conducting inspections, coupling/uncoupling, and securing rolling stock.
Key Responsibilities
- Safely and efficiently performing shunting activities for rolling stock within the BlueScope network and Sydney Trains mainline.
- Cultivating strong relationships with customers and key stakeholders involved in operations.
- Remain up-to-date on rail safety and other relevant safety protocols.
- Being responsible for ensuring customer satisfaction.
- Applying knowledge gained from classroom and practical training to daily work practices.
- Understanding and interpreting written shunt plans, safety regulations, procedures, manuals, and other relevant information.
- Effectively communicating instructions, processes, safety rules, and regulations to colleagues and supervisors through various forms like written, oral, diagrams, and schedules.
- Making informed and independent decisions using sound reasoning and knowledge.
- Reacting promptly and effectively in both emergency and non-emergency situations.
- Communicating clearly and professionally with coworkers, operations controllers, other shunting crew, drivers, railway management, and others.
- Successfully completing necessary training and assessments.
- Identifying and reporting faults or issues with rolling stock or infrastructure as necessary.
- High school education or general education development (GED), and minimum of 6-month job-related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced team environment.
- Able to work on a roster as part of our 24/7 operation.
- Ability to follow rules and procedures as required by the company or customer site.
- Ability to effectively communicate instructions.
- Ability to follow shunt plans, processes, procedures, safety rules and regulations to co-workers, supervisors, and others in written, oral, diagrammatic and schedule form.
- Ability to make independent judgments using sound reasoning skills and knowledge base.
- Possess a current class C or above driver’s licence.

- Salary is in line with the Enterprise Agreement. Upon successful completion of training (usually 6 weeks), you will increment to the next salary tier.
