CASUAL DIRECT CARE WORKER (WEE CARE)

Since 1974, Althea Projects Inc. has been supporting and strengthening the capacity of vulnerable people within Townsville and the surrounding regions. Our main programs are Foster & Kinship, Wee Care Residential and Althea’s Community Hub, from which we deliver a range of services.

Our Wee Care Residential Service provides crisis, emergency and short-term residential services for children aged 0-11 years. Due to the recent expansion of our services, we are looking to appoint Direct Care Workers for our Wee Care residential facilities on a casual basis.

As a Direct Care worker at Wee Care, you will be responsible for:

  • Providing a high level of care, supervision, safety, security and personal support services from within a range of established procedures for children who reside at our residential services.
  • Maintaining a clean and hygienic environment for all clients, inside and outside, including general housekeeping duties.
  • Preparing and providing healthy and nutritious meals for children, taking into account any dietary requirements.
  • Participating in team meetings, supervision, planning days and compulsory training.
  • Actioning all incidents involving clients and staff in accordance with policies and procedures and legislative requirements.
  • Assisting with organising outings and activities that relate to meeting the needs of children who are in the care of our residential services
  • Undertaking record management of client information, and administration tasks which support the work with clients.
  • Transporting children in accordance with meeting the needs of children who reside in our services and within the organisation’s policies and procedures.

Essential Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

  • A minimum of 12 months experience working in a childcare or direct care role and or proven experience working with children.
  • Child focused with the ability to provide developmentally appropriate care
  • Demonstrated experience in a range of childcare functions and responsibilities
  • Good cultural awareness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
  • Good organisational skills, with the ability to priorities and meet deadlines
  • Good communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Sound computer skills, particularly MS Word and Outlook
  • Working with children from a trauma informed perspective

Selection Criteria:

  1. Certificate III Early Childhood Education with relevant experience working with children of various ages, OR equivalent experience working in the human services field / child residential care, OR Diploma Early Childhood Education without experience
  2. Demonstrated skills and experience working with children and families who present with a range of complex health, social and wellbeing needs.
  3. Proven ability to undertake housekeeping routines including maintaining cleanliness and completing relevant charts and checklists.
  4. Ability and willingness to work effectively as part of a team to meet program goals and objectives.
  5. Proven aptitude in positively building and maintaining workplace relationships, and with experience in positively engaging with children and their families.
  6. Cultural awareness and experience in providing culturally appropriate engagement to Aboriginal Torres Strait Islander peoples
  7. Driver’s license, Senior First Aid Certificate and the ability to satisfy child and personal history screening; and current positive notice (Blue Card). Asthma & Anaphylaxis Certificate and Current Food Safety certificate (or ability to gain these within 4 weeks of commencement of employment).
