About the business/role/team

Monetary Policy Strategy (MPS) is a new department that will strengthen the Bank’s capabilities in monetary policy strategy and support the Monetary Policy Board’s decision making. It will provide briefings on monetary policy alternatives and strategy, lead internal discussions to develop monetary policy advice, and coordinate the underpinning processes.

It is a highly collaborative team that works with all policy areas, leveraging and empowering staff to contribute to the development of monetary policy strategy. It will harness ideas and perspectives from inside and outside of the Bank and deliver policy advice underpinned by in-depth analysis and research. The team will catalyse and drive strategic policy questions in close collaboration with the Bank’s leadership.


About the role

As the Senior Manager in MPS, you will lead a small team to deliver excellent monetary policy analysis and briefing materials and ways of working that catalyse collaboration. The role requires a combination of subject matter expertise and leadership ability to lead a high-performing team to produce practical and relevant policy advice informed by analysis and research.

You will work closely with the department’s leadership team to shape this new department’s priorities and workplan and align with broader strategic priorities. You will draft sections of the Monetary Policy Board paper, lead or present at some internal meetings and engage at times with the Monetary Policy Board.

You will also oversee your team’s collaboration with other departments on monetary policy-relevant topics, including in-depth analysis, scenarios and prioritised projects with researchers. Because success in this role builds on collaboration with peers and stakeholders, openness to diverse views, clear communication and the ability to draw out what is important are essential.

As a people leader, you will manage and guide your team, supporting and extending their development and capabilities. A key responsibility is fostering a culture that is open to diverse viewpoints and external ideas and is effective and dynamic in changing conditions. Your team will also include staff with responsibility for developing and coordinating clear, efficient and reliable end-to-end policy processes.


About you

  • Provide strategic and agile leadership, setting clear priorities for the team and contribute to the broader leadership of the department and successful delivery of its core tasks.

  • Identify and propose strategic issues and analytical topics relevant for the department’s workplan.

  • Oversee the team’s collaboration with other departments and functions, including with modelling teams on scenarios and other in-depth analysis and projects.

  • Build and sustain strong relationships with internal stakeholders to promote collaboration, analytical quality and harness diverse perspectives.

  • Develop team members analytical capabilities and skills in preparing monetary policy briefings through regular coaching and feedback.

  • Develop and enrich briefing materials on monetary policy strategy and policy alternatives in collaboration with others, clearly articulating the costs, benefits, and risks of different approaches and drawing on in-depth analysis, research and influential external thinking.

  • Incentivise team members to remain up-to-date on different monetary policy approaches and to integrate financial stability considerations and interactions with other policy levers.

  • Manage competing priorities effectively in a dynamic environment and support departmental planning and reporting activities.

  • Foster an open, dynamic and respectful team culture and ways of working that catalyse collaboration and model behaviours aligned with these values.

Technical capabilities

  • An experienced leader capable of building and leading a high-performing team, developing talent, and executing on core tasks and workplans.

  • A strategic mindset, ability to synthesise a wide range of views into clear, balanced and actionable policy advice and communicate ideas clearly.

  • Strong analytical skills and expertise in policy analysis, macroeconomics, financial transmission and macro-financial linkages, international economics and other subject areas relevant to monetary policy in Australia.

  • Experience representing a central bank or comparable institution in networks or external forums, with a deep understanding of central banking roles and functions.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage complexity, prioritise and adapt to changing conditions to deliver core outcomes.

  • Proven leadership skills, in particular the ability to inspire, lead through change and shape team culture, and demonstrated success in delivering outcomes.

  • Strong collaboration and stakeholder engagement skills and experience working with, advising and writing for executives or decision makers.

  • Excellent judgement handling sensitive or restricted information, in accordance with the RBA’s information security policies and code of conduct.

  • Tertiary qualifications in economics, finance, public policy or closely related fields, with post-graduate qualifications in these areas sought after.
